Intense, indeed.
I love dark family dramas, and Japanese dramas
tend to be particularly dark & disturbing, so I am
looking forward to a deliciously unhappy ending.

"family," which makes her remark quite ominous.

I love dark Japanese family dramas---with incest, murder, adultery,
illegitimacy, and vindictive young women---especially when those
kind of stories are set during evocative historical periods (like the
Taishō Era, as in this chapter).

That means this story is set in the year 1919. Three years before
(during WW1), Britain would've been buying boats for its military.
