I have heard that is a trick to discover how popular you really are. If you seem to meet people's eyes often, it is because they are looking at you. Hopefully because you are attractive. Also if people repeat your stories or are familiar with your speech patterns(jokes you use often, turns of phrase) that is because they listen to you and pay attention to what you have to say.
