Well, easier said than done, but in the realm of realism, the guy with the crush should brush this off and improve himself. My 2c: The story is written and presented exactly the same as a typical NTR scenario. The spirit of the story is literally the same. You could make this into a textbook NTR story by changing only a few lines.
