Yes, based on the first chapter, I'd say that Rea felt worthless due to her lack of success in school and whatever problems she was having at home. She was genuinely shocked by Yuu's earnest feelings for her to the point that she regretted trying to bring him down to her level and began to desperately crave the joy which his affection brought her. She feels like she has value in his arms because he needs her. It's a sad and twisted relationship, but if this story continues, hopefully both characters will grow to become more than what they currently are.

Just a few of my thoughts, but it seemed to match the sentiment of your statement concerning Rea's 'lost' status.
