The History of Hentai Manga

I’m going to start right off the bat and say that this book will likely not be of interest to most. It is a textbook after all, and the pictures which are provided are there to illustrate, rather than to titillate. If you’re ok with that though, what you will find, is a pretty detailed analysis of the semiotic history of certain tropes within Ero-manga and the various ways they’ve been expressed over time and evolved into what we know today. These are all covered in 8 chapters, with a 9th being about foreign interest and how quickly it has been understood and spread across the west.

So if you can't tell by the tags and preview pages, this is an actual book, not manga. If you're not sure if you would be interested in this book I would recommend checking out this short, free work by the same author:

That work is a very brief summary of the entire history of hentai and is similar to chapter 1 of this book. This book dives a bit deeper into hentai history and discusses the history of specific manga techniques or "expressions." This book also contains interviews with 6 notable hentai authors, including 3 who have been published on Fakku!

Overall, this is probably the most comprehensive history of hentai manga that exists and it is worthy of its title, however it is not truly comprehensive and the author acknowledges that more research can be done in the future. The author is hopeful for growth in the hentai manga academic space. I am too.
