I don't think you should read too much into it. The guy seems like a typical tsundere archetype, but the phrases that he's using just sound worse in English since we don't really use those kinds of phrases unless we actually hate the person. All that it really boils down to is that he has problems expressing his true feelings (tsundere trope).
