Because most of us are use to paying for stuff. You think all the free mangos and doujins are just from friendly nerds doing it for the fun or cleaning and typesetting scans or scanning books on there dime. A lot of the stuff you read is commission or pay for from the user pool and/or donations/ad fees to the nips for raws.
Nothing is free. Someone had to pay for something. Even your animu rips are ripping paid content or paid disks.
