I thought they were suppose to "teach" you while you are in the service. I guess that's just the army. I also find it slightly less appealing to do four years of service then get out and then go to college. I guess its better to graduate college at 28-30 rather than never attend.

Money, Purpose ,and Education. Those are the reasons I would enlist. Though, I would prefer to leave the service after four years instead of getting out when I'm 30.

Save? A country where a single party controls the entire country. Has a huge divid between the poor and the rich. A government that owns everything, has horrible human rights and environmental track records. Has basically zero laws that protect its people from contaminated foods such as the industrial chemicals in the baby formula, the contaminated pet food and the lead based paint in children toys?

They are supposed to step up and save the world?

@ PersonDude: It feels like it sometimes. Which really makes me wish America would just step off the world stage and let some other country take the role of trying to protect everyone.

Times like this really make me wonder what would happen if America just said Fuck you and went isolationist and neutral like Switzerland. Pulled all of our military personnel home, Disbanded our standing armies besides the national guard. Locked our borders and didn't allow people to cross. If one country invaded another and we didn't even lift a finger. If a natural disaster like a tsunami or a earthquake and didn't send any of our aid. All we would do is just trade with other nations. Let England or the other NATO member countries become the new world police.

Makes me wonder how well the rest of the world would handle the problems. Like the genocide in Darfur, the growing energy crisis, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran seeking nuclear weapons, Muslim terrorist wanting to destroy western democracy and institute Islamic Law over the world, Russia trying to become an international superpower again, China and it human rights violations. Lets not forget global warming and enforcing the Kyoto Protocol on countries like China and Russia not to mention all of the other problems of the world stage.

I don't know of any direct connection to the core in my family since a majority of them went for either the Army or the Navy. I have been entertaining the idea of joining the armed forces for several reasons such as the mistake I made passing up higher education and the fact without such an education I would be doomed to a pretty sad life. That and I could use the discipline in my life as I am a rather lazy person. The ability is there but, I don't have the discipline or the motivation to use it.

I choose the marines because they are considered a cut above the army and have an awesome reputation with employers. They hire retired military personnel before college grads unless the college grad is better beyond a shadow of a doubt. I figured if I don't get my life together in a few months then I might as well join the core and get paid and get an education.

Yes, because we need more people who gather intelligence on ordinary Americans because of some invisible "threat" that is amongst us even though very few of these "terrorist sleeper cells" are ever busted. So "counter terrorism", cyber crime, gangs, fraud, government fraud and lets not forget the role the do best, hunt pedophiles.

Yes, we need more inept groups like the FBI that do less and get paid more than the guy out there on the front lines. Fighting crime that we face everyday. Hell, the only time the FBI are even noted for doing anything is when they raid some church compound for whatever reason or bust up a bunch of perverts that want to fuck little kids. The NSA and homeland security do a better job as protecting Americans at home even though they invade our privacy even more than the FBI.

You can bash the Marines however much you want. Doesn't mean they don't serve more of a purpose than the FBI. Marines put their lives on the line for others regardless of politics or religion. They see themselves as protecting and serving others before themselves. My father served in the Army as a mechanic during the Korean Conflict, a guy I knew from high school (Jesse Holloway) is serving in the Navy, my best friend (Nick Dennison) is serving in the Air force along with the girl I had a crush on in 8th grade (Lauren Yancy). Two of my cousins (Neil and Eric Colvin) are in the army, one was a grunt (currently locked up for drug possession while on base) and the other is an army ranger. The boyfriends of a couple girls I knew in High school are serving in the Marines, even two of my nephews Patrick and Heath served in the Navy.

Unless you're one of those idiots that believes that we don't need a military and that if America disbanded its military and avoided conflict then the world would magically be a better place because the rest of the world would follow and disarm as well. Not to mention the amount of money we would save if we just didn't get involved in conflicts. Then you would realize the military serves a greater purpose of defending every American from nations such as Germany, Russia, China, Iran, and every other nation or group that wants to do us harm. If you don't agree with the war in Iraq or Afghanistan then get over yourself and do something. People talk about the military as if they are some faceless organization that is trying to take over the world. Military personnel are average people, they come from all walks of life just like everyone of this forum. If you believe the military is being used by the "shadowy, malicious, evil, mean" rich people then prove it rather than babble like a crazy guy with a tin foil hat. Then again you won't.

@ Hibia: He was in fucking Japan! The only reason we have any ships or ground forces in japan because of China and Russia. They serve as the guard dogs that keep the honest people honest. Your logic is terrible, you have to use better example than the word of a single nay-sayer that was stationed far away from any active combat zones. People like me would try to arrange coups. Perfect time for an man like me to try to seize power. Success...eh maybe, probably not. Though fun times for all!

Mu has a point. Recently after Ike hit all the gas stations with in the city limits was out of gas. Friday night on my way back from Indiana I had to stop in Nashville to fill up my car. To make a long story short, I had to call family to pick me up because all the stations within a a few mile radius of the interstate were out of fuel. My family was able to tow my car several miles down the road to a station that only had premium left.

I have mentioned it before but, supply and demand is at a razor thin margin. Even the slightest obstruction to the fuel lines then prices jump and if production suffers to a specific area then that area will run out of fuel. Certain states get their fuel from certain states specifically such as Hawaii gets its fuel from Alaska. Though the crash of the United States economy would have drastic measures for every industrialized nation of the world. Its kind of like, if we go down then a lot of you are going with us. Though it might not be the end of the world if we go down it will definitely have an impact on the world stage.

If our politicians continue the methods the have been employing then you won't have to worry about the possibility of the U.S. economy collapsing because, it'll happen and then America won't really matter anymore.

At that point you'll see me leading a angry mob around the country to round up every politician and have the publicly lynched for betraying America and putting their goddamn parties ahead of the people they are supposed to be serving.

Though one argument against the war for oil is that we are handing the country over to a democratically elected government. Sure, they will be nice to us but, we aren't getting free or discounted oil from them. America still gets a large portion of its oil from OPEC nations which is a stupid idea due to nation security and economic concerns. Only a fool would trust his enemies in such a position.

You are correct good sir. Though I believe you misunderstand this community. A lot of them won't de-rep you for nothing. The few that do are just douche bags and you shouldn't care about their opinions anyways. If you say something that offends someone and they de-rep you I'll replace it.

I had the same mentality. I don't like being broke. So I caved in can cut my hair. I hate how I look with short hair so I'm growing it out again (hopefully I'll get a job before it gets too long).
