Since there's "Free Programs That Do Cool Things", let's make "Websites That Do Cool Things". Key differences here are web-based applications (think Google Docs) or interesting functionality (think StumbleUpon). Let's steer away from the super obvious, but I'll add the somewhat obvious.
Edit: Clearly this list is going to get populated pretty fast and is already starting to get cluttered. If a list get's larger than 5 lines I'll start quoting the poster's list. Also, keep in mind the quality of the website.

All languages are essentially the same. Go with C++ play around, then once you get comfortable (get a good grasp on how to make polymorphic functions) you can literally do anything you want to do programming wise, with the problem being where to find specific info.
There's this misconception that the languages are different animals - they're not. Also, if you want more in depth help ask around at Stack Overflow.
The problem with learning C# as your first language is the memory management is abstracted from you the learner. Memory management is a key component to learn in programming, but C# and Java don't force you to think about it.

Bumping this thread, I have win8 - release version (not to be confused with release candidate). It's basically win7 with metro. I wouldn't recommend upgrading until the next service patch comes out, but if you're like me and don't have any sensitive operations on your computer it's only $30 or a tad more for the standard edition.
Metro is meh. It looks very pretty, but honestly everything is just aesthetics - task manager has been changed which at first I disliked, but am now getting accustomed to. I've noticed a significant increased speed in booting from shutdown, no significant changes (atleast with my machine) in booting from hibernation. Took me longer than necessary to figure out how to shut down.
Most games are compatible. I don't think much has changed in the graphics side other than WDDM v1.2 and DXGI 1.2, but I'm not experienced with either of them. Haven't had complications updating my AMD card's drivers, unlike what I hear with the Nvidia cards.
Anyway, ask me anything. I'm going to put up pictures of metro~

Let's go with simple. Having the sound effects translated can cause too much clutter on the panels, a small tl on the bottom usually does the trick.
One significant problem is that vertical writing seems more appealing to my eye than horizontal, since alot of panels seem to have more vertical space than horizontal space.
