Different authors, artists and publishers have different levels of tolerance towards fanfiction, doujinshi and other similar works. Some of them may allow fans to come up with their own works, while others feel that it is an act of copyright infringement.
I suppose the more popular (and influential) doujinshi artists may be able to strike a deal with the original creators of a particular title.

Actually, I am tempted to merge this thread with the one I created in the Specific Anime Series section, but the nature of the discussion over here appears to be focused on the various characters, so I suppose I should leave things as they are... for now. :)
