I think most students who learn it as a foreign language in school use the "Genki" series... or something. My friends in college who are studying it seem to use that.
I have seen it used by other schools and students as well, but I am not sure if the curriculum is meant more for a classroom setting or self study...

I know what FEMA coffins are, but this particular instance seems to stem only from a local news source.
Unless there is some national or international coverage/affirmation of the story, I'm hesitant to beleive it's anything out of the ordinary, and could just be something misunderstood by a local reporter.

- Understand personal boundaries, but also personal cues: A person who knows how far to keep from someone (both physically and socially) is a plus. But someone who can also read the mood and act appropriately within bounds is also great! Balance those two.
