In this day and age of international IP owning companies being able to track use/mentions/uploads of their properties online, sadly for us, this was bound to happen.
These publishers and artists do have every right to want control over their property. However, hopefully some prominent artists and publishers will also take a cue from seeing how many want access to said materials, and localize their publication in other languages.

I still consider the Avatar series to be animu even though it's Western-made. Does that count?I'm still waiting on Ladybug - which is supposed to come out this year - which is part Jap part French.
The Japanese end fell through, because the French end wouldn't pay enough for hand-done animation, if I recall correctly.
More recent images show a very 3D CG looking show... sigh.
Provide a link if you can? Because I spent hours looking for information relating to this but couldn't find anything.

Zagtoon is a French production company on the rise, specializing in animated TV-series for kids. It was created in 2009 by Jeremy Zag and Jacqueline Tordjman, the latter of whom co-founded the Saban Company (Power Rangers, Inspector Gadget). Zagtoon has recently made a splash in the international TV-market by producing Ladybug, the #1 selection at the 2013 Mipcom Worldwide Screening. The show is to be co-produced with Method Animation, the Disney Channel, and Toei Animation in Japan, with Bandai developing the toys.
And the "Recent News" section doesn't mention falling out with Toei over funding.
It says in the Variety article that it will be in 3D:
"CANNES — Leading French production outfits Univergroup Pictures and Onyx Films are joining forces to produce “Miraculous Lady Bug,” a stereoscopic 3D superhero toon."
I think I mistook the story about production from a different show.
However, given that the article came out at the same time as the "trailer" on YT, it's odd they'd choose to preview it as though it would be all anime style... shame.

It's not anime or manga if it's western in full. It's comics or cartoons/animation.
Only exceptions I can think of are Dirty Pair (Western comic, made anime) and the Animematrix (Western films, mixed western/Japanese OVAs).

They most certainly could be, yes. But I always find that before making gross generalizations about large groups based on one's interactions with them, it's better to look at oneself for potential faults.
