There's the possibility that she didn't take the "It's a date" comment too seriously. But just to be safe, dress smart-casual. If you overdo dressing up for the occasion and she didn't expect it to be an actual date then it could scare her off.

I beat Red (and the entire game leading up to him) with just a Delibird on Pokemon Crystal. I had to have HM slaves though.
