I think that nowadays we have become too strict on anime. We are expecting too much. Most of the series you named are big time productions with tons of money. Where you can expect amazing visual effects as well as good storytelling and characters. The discrepancy in budget affects greatly an anime production so of course you will see some pretty lame anime most of the time. However it's only lame if you start and compare it with big time hits worldwide. I think we need to accept some anime's for what they are and stop complaining about it.
