Get this in your head: there are tons of radio-active shit around you. You're just too poorly educated to know this. Why don't we give a damn? Because either the quantity of the radio-active material is so minuscule, or the half-life is so long that these things have almost no impact.

Here's a good rule of thumb: the shorter the half-life, the more dangerous something is. The longer the half-life the less of the issue. Something with twice the half-life is "ticking" twice as slow, emitting half the radiation.

Using the same logic Microsoft Security Essentials should be a good program too... guess what? It is. For a free anti-virus product it's pretty decent.

What makes you think that you motherboard is working in the first place? If the surge killed your CPU chances are, your MOBO is in bad shape too.

Before you buy a new CPU, make sure your MOBO is still working! Borrow a spare CPU (or buy a used one as cheap as you can get one) to do so.

If you need to buy a MOBO too, then right now buying Intel is a better deal right now, unless you're on a really tight budget, in which case AMD AM3+ is the way to go.
