Dark Souls has a story. It has a pretty damn good story too, actually. Much better than the stereotypical shit that came tacked on the other medieval fantasy RPGs that released around the same time, especially that POS that so many people considered GotY, Skyrim(job). The difference is not in the amount of content, but in the presentation. It's not just in the items that Medzy mentioned, though. The characters you speak to, the bosses you fight, the variety of locales you visit. The lore and plot isn't spoonfed to you. If anything, this game does "enveloping the gamer in its story" the correct way.

Blaming Dark Souls for not having a good story is the same as thinking The Little Prince is bad just because the audiobook's volume doesn't go too high. If there really was no story in the game, then this wouldn't be as popular as it is.

I could keep going on, but honestly, I've just about had it with people who give this game a hard time just because they need their hand held throughout the game and story, especially this one other asshole I know who talked shit about one of my favourite characters, without even having beaten the easiest boss in the game.
