At some point I became the carry for the team and I dunno how I ended up with more assists than annie who was acting as support for Darius.

It's a subpar way to play her. Your ganks are mediocre, you have weak early clear and dueling, and the jungle doesn't offer enough gold to become a crazy tanky-assassin. Getting some attack speed is probably a good way to go with her as it increases how many hits you can get in with W.

As a jungler you have some of the biggest influence in the game. Flexibility is key, knowing when and who to gank, how to gank (lane ganks? side ganks?), when to counter jungle (you generally won't be doing this as Irelia, many popular jungles will murder you) and objective control.

All of these naturally come with practice and observation of better junglers, but if you're just starting out, keep an eye on your minimap, look for any opportunities to either gank an enemy laner or counter gank. Don't die when you gank. One of the worst things a jungler can do is die in a gank and giving the enemy blue and red. Also, respect wards, know popular ward spots and try to gank around them.

With Irelia, you have a gap closer and a slow, and some natural sustain. Start blue first, and then get red. Once you get red, your ganks are going to see a increase in potency, but it doesn't change the fact that you're extremely fragile early on, and slower if you started cloth5. If you play her as jungle, ask your team mates to pick characters that can take a slow and immediately kill off it (Graves, Riven, Gragas for example) or force a blue pill.

You're probably going to have to get a wriggles.
