Don't bee too conservative with shading. On the pic above, the secondary color or shadows is almost similar with the base color. This is often done by beginners. Also, don't pick colors that are too bright (colors that reach saturation of 75% to 100%) like the blue hair of that twin-tailed girl.

According to a certain someone on Fakku, learning Hiragana and Katakana and grammar rules only takes a few weeks while rough memorization of Kanji takes months. So if we learn Chinese first, we can pretty much skip out on the kanji since Chinese and Kanji have pretty much the same meaning just different pronunciation.Kanji can take you years. Aside from memorizing how a kanji looks (its strokes), you'll also have to memorize multiple meanings and readings of it. It has onyomi and kunyomi reading.
This is just my opinion - It's true that Kanji came from Chinese but you can skip learning Chinese and learn them straight from your Nihongo lessons/tutorials.
