Sorry, I'm rambling :p but that's basically the short version in my personal opinion.
The "poor artist" shtick is a myth, they make more money than engineers. Hell a good number of them get over half a million USD per year on average.
Your taking the top 100 earners and using them as the average. The average artiest in Japan brings in around 28,000 USD a year. I couldn't afford to put a roof over my head for 28k a year much less take care of necessities.
