The new version will automatically check if your extensions are compatible. Most add-ons should have already been made 4.0 compatible by now unless the developer is slow. You can always check the Firefox add-on site or the add-ons homepage to check.
You can always go back to 3.6 if you don't want to use the 4.0 beta yet. Just prepare to upgrade sooner or later when the final version of 4.0 is out.
