I'd like to try the JLPT later but I'm currently retaking the second year exam of A-Level Japanese as I did pretty bad the first time. I got an A in the first year exam but a D or something in the second year one, and it levelled out to a C overall, so I'm retaking. It's because I took both exams in the first year and I wasn't as prepared for the harder one.

That's the great thing I guess, new stuff always around the corner xP. 4-5 years is a pretty long time, I can't wait until I hit that milestone ^^.I use the method involving radicals (building the kanji up from tiny pieces).
Wanikani is a great kanji learning site that I highly recommend, it's in beta right now and I think it's 8 dollars.
Flashcards or anki always work too though :p
The radical method is pretty helpful. Learning how a lot of Kanji are made up of tiny or simplified characters makes them look less intimidating.
I have set Kanji I have to learn for my exams so I'm not following any real method other than writing them over and over and using flash cards. I have anki and it's pretty good, though I usually like making my own physical cards more. It personally helps them stick more for me as I'm working with them hands on.
Haven't heard of Wanikani before but I know of Tofugu. Will have to look into it and maybe try it out.
