Abortion
In your perspective and values, do you think abortion is wrong?

Feel free to just use the poll if you do not wish to take part in the discussion.
I am aware that most of use here are men and could not possibly comprehend what women have to go through, both physically and emotionally. With that said, your empathy towards women doesn't necessarily have to affect your opinion. We're just here to express ourselves =/
Personally, I'm kind of torn, like a lot of you, I'm sure. Firstly, my religion and family tells me that abortion is wrong and unethical because it's basically killing a potential human. However, on the other hand, society is telling me that it's a viable option because not many women have a choice in the matter. Some pursue the idea because they are not simply ready to have a baby.
I'm not going to quickly jump to any side. I'll try to get a conversation/debate rolling.

let my qualify my answer.. if my wife and i had to really choose, she's leaning towards not aborting. but thats our choice..actually hers. but i dont believe that you should be denied access to abortion because of someone elses views. its the basics of the united states constitution. (not discussing subsequent amendments). my view is, if you want to "sin" go ahead cause you'll have to answer for your own sins. i wont be judged because of your choices. thats the whole point my wife and i stopped going to church is because of the holier than thou mentality, people acting all righteous(cause they go to church every week and then some, but totally ignoring their beliefs when it doesnt suit them)

i vote for yes but that depends on the case...
if the baby is good and healthy then there is no reason whatsoever to kill 'em right
but if the baby is sick or endangering both the mother and the baby...then what other option to they have, right?
my point is life comes first

Se this is the kind of stuff that should be in the serious discussions topic! Indeed a hard thing to accurately defend from either side, I knew it would come up at some point in the forums.
First off, let me simply state that I am taking a side, but I can see on both sides of the fence. I think that every woman should have the choice to abort if they so wish it. The reason I give is freedom of choice. Also, another reason I give to many pro-life people is as follows: Do you know how many children are put up for adoption each year? Not enough. There are still over 100 thousand kids that need to be adopted in the US alone. Also if you think a woman that does not want to have a baby will just not abort it because of the law, then you have another thing coming. I rather see someone do it safely then throw themselves down a couple of flights of stairs.
Also let me just state for the record. I DO NOT believe in partial birth abortion. If you are that far along you already have one foot in the fire so to speak.

Pro choice for me.
Though I think it should be hard to actually arrange the procedure and all that. I'm all for people not screwing up their lives (drunk 17 year old 1 night stands come to mind) but the idea that people that are just selfish and lazy would do it just pisses me off.
I don't think that an aborted fetus was ever technically alive though. It's sad but the technical nature of it is enough that I can stand by that decision and not be disgusted by it. I'm going to go to school to be a lawyer by the way so I can safely say that (for the time being at least) I'm willing to firmly rest my hat on technicalities.

Talos, I like the point you made about adoption. That is very true.
On that note, kind of drifting off topic, there are a lot (haven't researched exact numbers) of children that are homeless or up for adoption in North America; especially here in Canada, which is supposedly one of the top 5 best countries to live in. It's hard to believe that the U.S., which consumes 30% of the world's resources, still have problems like these.
Anyways, back to the topic. Since I can't ultimately join either side, I would want to discuss ways to help women not have to make that choice in the first place. I definitely think that educating women (as well as their partners) is a very effective way to go; abstaining, usage of condom, etc.
I would also like to emphasize the fact that women resort to abortion for the benefit of themselves. Factors such as homelessness, poverty and being a single mother certainly contribute. You must ask yourself: What kind of decent mother would want her child to grow up in a world where only pain and hunger awaits them? With that being said, another effective solution is to have more support for mothers or awaiting mothers. If she knows that she and her child will be taken care of, she may consider bearing the child.

Talos pretty much covered my view point, let me just say this. If it was my child I would NEVER even consider Abortion, but at the same time if my sister decided that Abortion was the correct path I would support her 100%. Why? because that is my sisters choice, not mine. Its great to have strong belifes in something, but that does not give you the right to strong arm others into thinking like you do

the only problem i have with abortion is its use as a contraception method that usually paid for out of my tax dollars, i understand someone makes the mistake once in thier life, (ok here is my get of jail card) but when you show up for two or three, well start paying.
i'm also wierded out by the fact that parents arent notified when thier underaged daughter is having an abortion. if i had a daughter and someone didnt inform me i'd be standing at planned parenthoods doors with a shotgun aiming at the counselors. as a parent i'd be pissed of at someone interfering with me raising my kids. I'm not naive, i know teenagers have sex, they'll do it no matter how strict and careful you are. but i'll be damned if someone doesnt inform me if my kid(boy or girl, cause it can happen to either one) is in that situation.
my parents always said to me(after my girlfriends mom caught us having sex). the consequence of sex is either an std, a baby or both. you want to play like and adult, we'll force you to step up. being an adult isnt defined by passing some magic number 18, its defined by the responsibility for our actions. and i trully belive if ppl lived by that, we'd be in much better shape. (off track, like that woman who sued Mcdonalds for burning her lap with coffee. if youre dumb enough to spill coffee on yourself while driving, suck it up cause you had a short bus moment, its not mcdonalds fault for doing thier job and serving you a hot coffee, i bet she would have sued if she paid and only got a warm coffee. or that whole lolicon discussion we had, wanna watch lolicon...great go at it, but the moment you start acting on it and try to hurt someone, i hope you get dropped of in the meanest section of prison with "i like the kiddies" tattooed on your forhead....i know i'll have to clarify this later but i'm donr for now)

now about this topic here for me, i would b hanging on a balance beam see, cuz like many other people here first if i hold the choice making power i would say no to abortion but..... if it is my wife desicion then i would have to surrender without condition. Kinda sad actually about abortion if it is a baby then i would feel sorry for him or her , but if it is not formed then i dun feel anything. Call me HEARTLESS if u want but thats who i am .

That or completely disown her.

Look, some people like to have sex and can be completely responsible while doing so, but, unfortunately, there isn't such thing as 100% "safe sex". There'll always be risks, but some people are willing to take them. Even more so when there's an effective solution to those risks, and I don't find anything wrong with that.

Short and simple [my opinion]. Abortion is wrong but people still need to support it. The person who aborts the baby (The surgeon) is same as a murderer even with or without the female's consent (it's no other choice for the female since she can't support a baby) it's like involuntary euthanasia.

this reminds me of something we briefly talked about in my human sexuality course. with the increased use of fertility drugs, its getting a lot more common for women to have 3,4,5, however many kids (news of a woman having 6 started the discussion). the problem with this being that with that many kids, sevral of them are often very premature (in this case they started popping out as early as 5 months), its not like they all come out after 9 months all together. this leads to a variety of developmental problems and can cost millions per kid, which is ultimatley paid by the tax payers.
so the question is, should women using fertility drugs be allowed to keep all those kids and just have the government (therefor tax payers) pick up the bill or should they have to abort a certain number of the fertilized eggs before hand?

Well in third world countries (my bad, that term is no longer politically correct), it is common to have many kids. Population graphs clearly state the correlation between poverty and birth rate.
Poverty-> Lack of Education -> Have Many Children -> Poverty
That's not the complete cycle, but I hope you got the gist of it.
Women in developed countries have an average of 1-2 kids.
Anyways, I know this doesn't completely tie in with abortion, but I'm just throwing this out there for future reference.

i personally voted i dont know because of my hippocracy.
My belief is that the only women that should get abortion are those who have been raped, and only if they want to have one.
but i dont think i could live up to my own beliefs if i was faced with this situation with my own girlfriend.
I would definitely give her my support whatever she chose, but i would want her to keep it.

my opinion and I want to stress the word opinion
but I think the abourting is basicly wrong it is a viable chose in the cercomstance of rape or something simmaler other wise I think you should not take the life of another human being even if it is a mistake you need to live with the consequences of your actions. and here is a fact their were aprioxamatly twenty million abortions in the past 30 or so years (sorry if I didn't get the years right)but if those children had been born and grew up we would not have the same dependence on the illegal imagrant workers that we have now.
also just want to say that I belive abortion is murder and that people should not try and rationalize it by saying its not a life 6 weeks into pregnacy the child can think it is alive so it is bacicly legalized inafantcide
once again this is my opinion so just sayin that.

I believe it's wrong. I do have religious roots, and they do play a big part, but I've decided for myself that I don't want to ever resort to that.

Abortion is wrong, morally. How can one argue the murder a defenseless human?
You are stopping a beating heart. You are ending a human life-cycle.
Respect life.
You people who say 'YES' to abortion.... what if your mother, had said yes to it, also?
Feel the burning stare of my HAMSTER and change your ways!

I vote no because there are already too many dumb people in the world poisoning it. I'm also pro-choice. Now if you could give me a 100% GUARANTEE that that child would grow up to be good for the world and for society, then MAYBE I'd vote that abortion is wrong. That whole "be fruitful and multiply" thing was pretty useful in the beginning, but don't you all think it's a good idea to start concentrating a little more on quality instead of quantity?
