Good First Anime for non/anti-anime ppl

Im the only one I know irl that enjoys anime. Those who know I like anime often give me crap when I watch some, and Im quite tired of it... like really ****ing tired of it. So I gonna lay down a challenge to them, to sit down and watch 1 anime movie/ova/few eps of a series/something, and if its as terrible as they make it out to be then I will concede and just put up with their annoying behavior.
I searched over the forums a bit but did not location a thread like this. So now I would like to appeal to the vast knowledge that is the population of FAKKU! and ask which anime should I use to prove the value of Anime? Im certainly gonna avoid purely hentai related material, but the target audience is mature so mature themes are welcome.

For the ones who like Drama, make them watch Clannad ep 1-9. If there's anything more dramatic than the fist few episodes of Clannad, recommend that instead.
.....for drama, there's also Boys Be
For the ones who like horror, make them watch the first case of Ghost Hunt.
For the ones who like watching random lives of people, either Lucky Star or K-On!. It's better if it's K-on! first since Lucky Star has a lot of Anime reference, which will scare off the anti-anime people even more.
For the ones who like sports, It's a split between Hajime no Ippo and Slam Dunk!
For the ones who like mindgames and suspense altogether, then recommend Death Note.
For the ones who like Adventure/Action, there's always the Top Three Shounen. Those or Rurouni Kenshin, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, etc.

If they think anime is just for kids then deffintly go with akira or high school of the dead once a few more episodes come out. Pumpkin sissors could also work as well.

A few tips when choosing:
Let THEM choose which ones to watch, give them a list, a quick synopsis of what the series is about, and make sure YOU'VE already watched it so you can discuss things if you want. The anime in question must be relevant to their interests also...try to avoid things with too much of an ecchi theme...
As an anime fan since birth (Long story...), I know of a few misconception some people usually have;
-Cartoons = Kids
Therefore, they see us watching a "cartoon" and they think we need to "grow up" and watch what they watch only...even if the anime in question is CLEARLY not made for kids, that's just the way they see it. Make them see that different animes are made for different groups of people of varying ages, there's really nothing wrong with a grown man watching anime...since it's usually ADULTS who MAKE them.
-Like I said earlier, avoid series with an ecchi theme

You want them to watch the anime without being hindered by their single-minded belief that all anime is cartoon porn...breaking that method of thinking is hard.

In all seriousness, if they're young-ish then go for Bleach. They won't listen if you tell them that it's terrible past 60 episodes, but they'll find out, and imo it is as good an introduction as you can get; Cowboy Bebop I actually haven't seen - didn't like the look of the animation - but from what I've seen and know of it, that could be a good one. I know six people who started on Bleach, went on to the likes of Evangelion, Death Note and FMA by recommendation/popularity, and then started looking for stuff themselves. FLCL is a good one post-anime introduction to really get people into the medium.
For real sceptics or someone in their 30s or 40s, I'd go for Grave of the Fireflies as the ultimate proof that animation can be adult and serious. Either move on from that to something a little more lighthearted and magical from Ghibli, or something dark and mature like Paprika. Feature-length films are a lot easier to negotiate watching than a series (full of weird customs and clichés) in an entirely different medium.

Um... it all depends what kind of genres ur into.
if you like action, try out Black Lagoon: its about a office guy to got abandoned by his company and ended up sticking with the modern day 'pirates' that he was delivering a package to. Its action packed, and has enough of a story to hold it all together nicely
If you like zombies, try out Highschool of the Dead, it just started releasing on the 5th, so its only 1 ep in so far. But i love it so far. Theres something about it that doesnt make it so hollywood, but from wat i know its about a zombie outbreak and theres some students that made it away from the mass of them and are trying to live through this while hangin in the highschool.... hence the name of the show :p
Comedy: try out desert punk, i find it absolutly hilarious, has lots of action, a decent story. its about a 'handyman'[merc] who will finish the job at w.e the cost, and constantly trying to get with Junko because hes obsessed with larges tits and sex.
If your looking for a good story, but doesnt take 100+ eps to finish try Peacemaker: its about a young boy and his brother that have been orphaned. they join the special police force [19th century japan] called the Shinsengumi because he wants to get stronger so he can avenge his parents. its not as actiony as you might think it is, its a very story driven anime

I recommend Code Geass. It's very fast, has a lot of plot twists, action, giant robots and drama.
I recommend not doing this. Ep1 has a very slow start. There's also the matter of these people getting the opinion that all anime ppl are pedophiles/lolicon/weird if this were an introductory anime. As a substitution, I would suggest Azumanga Daioh but I wouldn't show them this because you'd want to be able to convince that anime has good stories and these two shows are mostly just leisure shows. If the people are "anti anime" then nothing you show them will convince them, iv met these type of people before and no matter how serious, gory, or artistic, the show maybe they will only see "pokemon" because they have have already made it up in there mind that anime is for kids. Its is really hard to convert these people into liking anime.

Since you are only going to get one shot at this (and don't be disappointed if you never get that chance - as the previous poster mentioned, it is hard to change peoples minds who are predisposed to an opinion, that they are wrong), I'd go with a good movie rather than intro episodes of a series. Many series are slow to build interest.

It is extremely hard to convince people that anime is good who did not get into it themselves or through a close person earlier on.
The only slight chance is showing them one of the few animes that are well made. This means No shitty harem anime where their is no plot and just boobs and getting kicked for 23 episodes. Even guys who love sexy stuff might find it just creepy because they aren't used to 2d nudity yet.
Also the anime / manga should be well drawn and animated. Fluid smooth animes where they don't reuse the same cell over and over are few in between but those are the ones you need to be showing. After all a lot of anime is cheaply and mass produced so it reaches the anime audience quick and without die hard effort. Series that are really well and smoothly animated are : R.O.D the ova, FLCL, Speed Grapher, ToraDora!, etc
a good route could always be introducing the fail proof and innovative classics that gave anime it's popularity. A lot of people seem to dig animes like FLCL and azumangah diaoh without being otaku because they have such a great sense of humor that it overwrites the fact it's beyond bizarre almost. ( kind of like adult swim shows)
so just be picky with how you go about choosing what to show. Chances are still they will find it very strange but the series I'm about to list might be a good place to start:
Anime:
- flcl
- Paranoia agent ( really well animated, short but hard hitting, and very engrossing dark storyline)
- speed grapher ( fantastic action, very lovely storyline)
- full metal alchemist ( this seems to always be a bit among newbs and it's become a classic)
- higashi no Eden ( it's so bizarre and hilarious from the get go I'm sure it could grab anyones attention and make them smile)
- R.o.D the ova or tv ( fluid animation, sweet characters, classic anime)
manga:
- saikano ( my all time favorite, very simple art but an extremely deep and emotional story that is superbly written and easy for anyone to b'awwww too
- azumangah diaoh ( comic strip humor might be easier to stomach)
- chobits ( usually a good introduction to shojo for girls)
-death note ( as much as I hate to admit it the storyline is very dark and twisting and can draw in an audience who likes mystery or murder tv shows so it could be a good place to go. Plus the art in the manga is pretty damn good. Just pray they don't turn into anannoying fan girl/ boy)
- hot gimmick ( the realistic plot and characters could make this a win for fans of drama tv shows like gossipgirl and so on)
and there's more but that's just a few
Oh and I'd suggest staying away from stuff like naruto and bleach aka series that had a good origin but now run on for a million chapters and give the characters catchphrases for attacks and crap. I am a big fan f the first ten volumes of bleach and then I went sour even as a hxc manga enthusiast. Plus the anime versions of these shows are barely swallowable. Just don't show em. They put the boo in weeaboo

I always say Cowboy Bebop. The English dub is a great start; it's accessible on TV still, and doesn't have too many odd Japanese-cultural-moments to make anyone confused like a slice-of-life show might.
It really also shows the extent to which anime can be used for action, drama, AND comedy.
Plus, it's just so fun and easy to watch. Great animation and music = good time for anyone.

This. New people do not want to read subs. You want to slowly ease them into anime and not forcefully throw them into the mix. They'll probably want another cool action story after that one so choose something like Afro Samurai. I wouldn't recommend it if they don't like to hear cursing though. After that it really depends on the person's tastes.

Basically, you want anime like this. I DO NOT RECOMMEND CLANNAD since really doesn't shine until later episodes and you don't have that long to convice them. Also you want something with WONDERFUL dubbing - and Clannad does NOT have good dubbing.
Black Lagoon, Darker than Black, and any highly regarded Seinen or Josei sub genre that have good dubbing are your best bet. Trust me I am a professional, I've gotten preppy highschool cheerleaders to watch anime. Also, if you only have one shot then try a movie - something without a Overly complicated plot (Read or Die might be good). Of course, I really would have to know the person and what they like, but as someone pointed out already, an anime like DeathNote works great with anyone who loves suspense mind games type stories espcialy since the first episode draws you right in.
And that is the most important. No matter how much of a great anime something is, make sure the first episode makes them want to watch a second.

Maybe the first Ghost in the Shell Movie. While Innocence looks fantastic, it's really heavy on references so it's not really accessible, while the 3rd movie is a tie-in to the series, so is also out.
I also recommend the Cowboy Bebeop series ...and the Movie! Damn good animation, fantastic music and a great dub. It has adult themes, but it's light, funny and finally delivers with a solid "whump!".
