Good First Anime for non/anti-anime ppl

I've got oldies.
1. Urusei Yatsura - 1st anime ever watched that got me hooked to anime.
2. Slam Dunk
3. Yuyu Hakusho
You know, Anime isn't just watching cartoons on TV screens. It's all about understanding the story and feeling the story your watching. When you learn this then you shall understand why there are people who likes anime.
Have you tried watching animes that makes you cry?

Afro Samurai, definitely. If they dig stuff like that, of course.

@ KuoCross "Let THEM choose which ones to watch" Hell of a good idea, kinda figured Id select some of the best options then predetermine which to show who... while I think I could nail the right choices it will be better to present the options to them with a synopsis and let them decide. And you are right on with the "Cartoons = Kids", this is unfortunately close to the attitudes I'm trying to change, but here's hoping.

It is unthinkable :) "No matter how much of a great anime something is, make sure the first episode makes them want to watch a second. " Deffinately a good call, if not a movie then I gotta make the series options ones which will make them want more...
I had my leanings toward Princess Mononoke, Sword of the Stranger, Death Note, and Ghost in the Shell. Gotta cover some basics: Sword combat, creepy mind f*ck, future sci-fi, and of course Hayao Miyazaki.
Got some good ideas to consider now, adding maybe Cowboy Bebop (the movie probably), Samurai Champloo, and Akira.
Hadn't thought of using Hajime no Ippo, might be a good option (though only 1 I seek to convert might be interested).
FMA, a fav of mine but gonna hold it in reserve as a next step.
FLCL... I was really unsure if this should be an option, I liked it but seems a bit out there, maybe a next step.

And, it of course helps that I already own nearly all the options people have brought up... guess I have decent taste in Anime :)
