I might agree with you a bit about UQ Holder.

With Negima, I was blown away by the progression of what it started as and what it evolved into, especially with the memory of Love Hina. He also changed the "oblivious and mindless" protagonist (again) I've found everywhere else, this time from the beginning. Negi was an interesting character with a dream and objectives that he actively worked and struggled to achieve, when he did, and suffered when he couldn't. He laughed, he cried, he matured and developed into a better and stronger person, never losing track of his goal.

The world ken created had filled me with wonder and intrigue. After reading the first ark with the encounter with the wyvern, it made me want explorer Mahora Academy.

Even the supporting cast matures and develops, granted, I feel ken overloaded himself with the amount of characters, a lot of them only ever get real focus on them once or twice (not enough to flush out and develop), but quite a bit of the cast develops from stereotypes to almost human feeling characters.

Negi had a goal, consistent throughout the story, and Negi never lost sight of it, never derailed by some irrelevant crap. The story consistently progressed as it continued, with at least one character, at a given time, developing/growing.

In UQ Holder though, Ken is really relying heavily on the achievements of Negima. Eva, one of the most significant supportive members of Negi's companions has been (currently on chapater 8) carrying the story entirely. The protagonist dream is hardly big enough to carry the story that is unfolding. It is through each and every action Eva makes, made, and will make, that Touta is progressing to where he is now. It is barely his decisions towards that outcome, but instead, him simply settling because it was chosen for him.

He is not a character as interesting as Negi, and it is through Eva that this series carries on. (With that being the case I would much rather prefer a series revolving around Eva as the main.) Touta himself isn't particularly boring, just that, he has no real ambition outside "singing" (for his friends), he lacks an independent characteristic.

As well, the supportive cast, seeming to be mostly adults, causes me to expect that most won't develop as far as Negi's cast did. I don't have a big problem with that, just, I never felt Ken flush out adult characters before.

I do realize I am being hyper critical, considering Kentaro was much more of a negative in the start. Ken captured me with Negi fairly early, and now, Ken is much better with portraying characters than he was in the beginning of Negi. And since Ken is taking from material that has had so much time to develop the world and the characters within it. Touta, as is, isn't interesting or what I would expect. Very generic so far, even the "missing past" (by itself, what it is and what it develops, for the Touta and the story, may change my opinion). I really fear that Touta's "will to fight" will be the generic "I fight for the sake of others" which is really "my goal is the happiness of my friends from an endless seeming onslaught of villains who only happens to be apparent at said time".

How much of UQ Holder can you understand without Negima.... I wonder.

...Touta's origin, as has been mentioned, Konoka is from the main branch, meaning there are other people with the Konoe name, also meaning, even if Negi married into the Konoe's, it doesn't mean it can only be Konoka. Could be a cousin, aunt, ect.

Touta popping out something like Magia Erebea? I'm not 120% convinced of how that would happen... I would've thought Negi's blood would not be enough to have such an ability, but... remembering how ME had changed Negi throughout the course of the Magic World arc, it's not COMPLETELY impossible, I guess.

My next big expectation will be what Touta's decision will be concerning martial arts...

-The other 2 I'm not sure of: One is probably MAkie, but who's the last one with semi long hair? She's too short for Asuna. Is it Ako? But I see no reason for her to accompany him after her rejection.
