You didn't miss it. Most of us simply refrain from bringing up titles that are more than twice as old as Fakku :P
Not that I mind though (we make exceptions from time to time and Mai-HiME definitely deserves it) and if this topic gets proper feedback I might consider presenting a few more awesome yet omitted 'oldies' my self ...
As for the show ... absolutely, fuckin' loved it !!!
It starts rather mediocre, the character designs aren't anything special and the monsters look weird ... So what !? The amount of drama, tragedy, plot twists and shit it gains as it progresses overshadows everything !
I also learned to truly appreciate some characters (Mai especially) while re-watching the series.
BTW - the above-mentioned isn't the main reason I loved the series. The music is. I simply lack the words to express how much I love that soundtrack. There's only one other series that tops it and I'm currently considering creating a topic for it...

Despite the Yuri tag, that dosent show till the latter stages of the anime. For the most part the romance factor in this anime is still strong for the guy/girl scenerio, for those that havent seen this anime and dont like Yuri at all.

Yeah and I have to admit I thought Mikoto was funny.

Since I already brought up the music ...
Mezame, Zeriam mentioned. One of many awesome tracks :
The scenes shouldn't spoil too much since they're from the early episodes and I wanted to show what lurks hidden inside the series.

Love this one, I might just go ahead and get the full OST to Mai-Hime.

You do that. 2 albums exist to be exact and both are more than worth downloading.
I actually didn't like the OP that much BTW. It's the pompous Yuki Kajiura music inside that gave me an orgasm :P

These albums are INDEED worth searching and downloading for! :D
I like the OP, as well as the other tracks. I still like Mezame the best, but the albums have so many other great tracks. *Ensei is another good one...
Variety of the tracks/music from Mai-Hime

Funny... So many people raved over this series and how great it was. To me it was just... there. It wasn't great and it wasn't bad. Half the girls were cute, the other half annoyed me. The story was all right but not groundbreaking in any way. To me it was very mediocre.
Oh well, to each his own as they say...

Going to agree with Sun Quan here, though I'm starting to think I'm confusing this series with Mai-Otome which is the only anime I ever dropped and I have forced myself to watch alot of animes.
If I recall correctly,

So how is the anime compared to the manga? Though it has been awhile, is it worth watching the anime even after reading it?

So how is the anime compared to the manga? Though it has been awhile, is it worth watching the anime even after reading it?The manga is an adaptation of the anime in this case and it never received the best of reviews. The awesomeness of the anime (obviously not a common opinion but simply my personal one) lies in the event/tragedy buildup, stunning sound and a nice genre mix - things one can't really transmit to paper that are also fairly immune to time.
So yeah - still definitely worth watching IMO.

Plus the OST/Music was very nice and to my liking.

The manga for Hime/Otome was a piece of shit. The anime was a hell lot better imo, especially episode 9, the natsuki hitchhiking scene.
