It's definitely one of my favourite anime series. I first watched it a few years ago when I was going through a similar experience as Sato and it really helped me out allot. I recently bought the dvds and it's still really enjoyable but more funny than anything.. Wasn't aware of the novel, I'll be checking that out for sure.
