What's so amazing about Death Note?

(If this has been done too many times, let me know.)
PLEASE SHOW RESTRAINT WHEN ANSWERING, fanpeople.
I go to FYE, it's all Death Note merch. Borders is the same. Everytime I open an Anime magazine, Death Note's featured at least twice.
I'm really not seeing it. Could anyone please explain (without yelling at me,) what's made this series so popular? I'm thinking of downloading the 1st episode, but I don't wanna jump into a craze that'll finish too quickly.

I think the attraction to Death Note is that an evil genius is the main character and there's L (who people seem to like for no reason at all).

Personally, I enjoyed the series because it was intelligent. As a viewer, you didn't just sit and watch the episode and go about your business when the episode ended. You could think about what would happen next, try to predict how things would go, that sort of thing. And the series didn't insult your intelligence. It didn't spell things out nicely and neatly like too many series do.
Also, it's a pretty cool idea, being able to kill people with just a face and a name.
As for the popularity and Death Note stuff covering stores, a lot of it comes from the show being popular. Usually, otaku buy tons of stuff when they like a series, so when a series is popular, retailers try to take advantage of that fact. As for why Death Note is popular with a lot of people, this is kind of sad, but I say largely, it's because it deals with death and it has hot guys. Teenagers love death and morbid things, and teenage girls love hot guys, even if they're psychotic (sometimes more so if they're psychotic).

He's the bad-attitude kind of hero that people tend to like. The other thing about Death Note that appealed to the audience was that even if the methods were wrong, he was doing righting wrongs regardless of method and ensuring that justice was met - killing criminals. I don't think he killed people randomly; it was either people who deserved it or people who were after him. If you had the power to right the wrongs in this world, would you use it? This anime answers that, though I suppose the real message at the end was that true justice carries through, in the sense that Light's justice was perverted.

Best Master-San
Yeah, it was good until it reaches the "half checkpoint" of the story, I got less interested.
But' it's still good enought to watch/read though.

Two words : Near Sucks.
I really loved the series because I liked how Yagami Light thought. Light was a very intelligent guy. Much more than your average person. You could think of him as pure. He gets his hand on the power to Kill people. Now this is where the series got to me. He didn't do it for his sake (maybe a bit for his narcissism) but he was purging humanity from killers and such. The only thing I thought didn't make sense was the ending. I loved how Light was a very calculating kind of guy. Always with a plan B and C ready.
Also the series is very good at keeping you on your toes wondering what's going to happen.
In other words your hero is a villain and you can't help yourself to love him.

Like others have said, it was an intelligent show. I loved how it set two geniuses against each other, each trying to outsmart the other. They looked at each others actions, searched for openings, weak points, and it was all thought out pretty well.

However, I don't think anyone can completely explain the attractiveness of the series, it's just something you have to watch in order to understand why it's so likeable.

I thought of Death Note as an intelligent anime. It was awesome to Kira(Light) and L go at it. I mean each episode was like they were playing a strategic game of chess.
However, the only thing I didn't like at the ending was...
Though was also one awesome thing about the ending...
If you're into this kind of anime then I say you should give it a try, if not then I think you should still give it a try.

What I especially liked was that the anime didn't rape the story and force you to read the manga afterwards. The whole atmosphere in the anime is really great and the music used is quite fitting. The story doesn't get dragged out into several seasons but it goes fluently, and I'd say you're missing out on something if you haven't watched / read it yet.

Thanks, everyone ... Although the majority of that was a very biased opinion, thank you all for your answers. Since everyone seems to love it so much, I'll try Ep. 1.
It seemed like you guys kind of got into a little war there for a few posts.
And speaking of the merchandise again .. I'm into that a little myself. Not Death Note, but I do have a few things. Negima! Wall scroll, a few random anime plushies ... And that's about it. Oh, and some 'Haruhism' keychain charms. Planning to get a Haruhi scroll soon, too.
But anyway, I'll post here again once I finish the first episode.

Although the majority of that was a very biased opinionI don't know about you, but my post was based on an objective opinion based on what about Deathnote attracts people in general since I never watched the anime and only read the manga. I think people find the manga better than the anime, but now that's a subjective opinion.
