[Yamamoto Arisa] Aiko no Ma-chan

Aiko no Ma-chan is our first non-adult manga. It was originally cancelled by its publisher Comic Zenon two days before its scheduled release for fear that the manga could be considered a "harmful publication" under the Tokyo Metropolitan Ordinance Regarding the Healthy Development of Youths. In response to the cancellation the author, Yamamoto Arisa, ran a successful crowdfunding campaign on the Japanese website Fundiy and later had the manga officially published by Kasakura.

At FAKKU we stand against any and all forms of censorship, so this title is especially important to us. We are proud to announce that FAKKU will be publishing the official English edition of Aiko no Ma-chan!

Aiko no Ma-chan tells the story of Aiko a girl who, shortly after getting her period, discovers she has the ability to talk to her vagina Ma-chan. Ma-chan accompanies Aiko on the path to womanhood while teaching her about growing up and becoming an individual. Unlike other publications, Aiko no Ma-chan does not shy away from 'taboo' topics such as menstruation and female masturbation.

Aiko no Ma-chan is a landmark publication which demonstrates the diversity in how we talk to girls about their bodies. It's a coming of age story of a young girl dealing with the hardships and experiences of getting your period and experiencing sexuality for the first time. Furthermore, it seeks to normalize the natural changes of a woman's body through puberty by using manga as a medium, making it accessible to a wider audience. This is of course in stark contrast to how typical Japanese media fetishizes developing girls while also condemning them for the natural changes of their bodies.

Yamamoto Arisa was the assistant to Hajime Isayama, the illustrator of Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyoujin). She had been an artist since elementary school and worked on Attack on Titan with the goal to create Aiko no Ma-chan once she was finished.

Hm. This actually sounds interesting, and its controversy reminds me a lot of the mess Megumi Igarashi went through with her kayak. It seems people are only with female sexuality when it's not on a woman's terms. :P

Provided that this work can avoid the dread mistake of implicitly celebrating the sexualization of growing youths while purportedly criticizing it ("Imposing sexuality to kids via male gaze is wrong. Here, look at this little girl in a babydoll~!") and properly show how that stuff happens to a girl growing up, I've got some hopes for it. But that's a pretty subjective line right off the bat.

Kudos to Fakku printing something that isn't porn.

Good choice, I'm hoping this will pave the way for Henreader's book too someday.

After the successful kickstarter campaign of Kodomo no Jikan, i'm glad there is people willing to stand for freedom of speech by supporting the artists.

This manga's plot sounds both interesting & hilarous, so i hope Fakku is really serious about their anti-censorship policy because you can bet western SJWs will be as loud (if not more) as they were for Kodomo no Jikan.

Yeah the KnJ licensing/funding was a small miracle, glad I caught wind of that.

Huh, looks pretty cool actually. Seems like a bizarre idea, but hopefully it's well executed. You guys obviously saw some merit in it. Guess I'll look into this one some more, but thanks for bringing it over.

Stories where genitals are a character, or a setting always have my attention.

Kinda feels like this will be a female version of the series "My Balls". Of course, that was more comedic, and less about coming of age.

Mr.Everwood will see you now ;)
Very interesting.

I'm all for challenging taboo so this will be a lot of fun to read.

I love My Balls. I also think it's hilarious trying to talk about My Balls to other people because, well, the title is so misleading in conversation lol.
