12/2015: Removal of unlicensed doujinshi content

Let me underline the other important part there. This one is here with the author's permission.

Umm... I'm pretty sure this issue has less to do with the author, but rather the copyright owners of the series it is parodying. Which, again, is an [il]legal gray area that Japan looks the other way about because it helps sales of the source material.

It is a gray area indeed, but licensing here still strictly means the consent of the owner of the work itself, not any other possible copyright holders affected by the content of the work.

There are other sites with bigger libraries of the parody doujinshi. They aren't leaving the internet forever. you'll probably be able the see the uncensored that is for sale here too on the rival sites for free. So I don't understand the argument.

One of my major points is that there is this huge category of this site's content, called parody doujinshi, that will never be brought back. And no effort was made, or at least made known to anyone, to figure out some way to license, or create a system to license, that content and bring it back.

Let me address that major point. Throughout for posts you speak in absolutes, yet you have no idea (which you acknowledge at least in this section) what efforts are being made to expand the range of content. We are in a unique position by partnering with one of the biggest publishers. We did not go over to Japan and met the Chief on Hentai last year. If we want to expand to other sectors outside of Wani's content, we need to reach out to other people.

After decades of piracy, you can't expect a handful of people to magically make all of that available legally over night. This is one of the reasons I said we're not trying to stop piracy. We know we can't offer everything right now (and realistically, never will), so we won't take legal actions to shut down scanlators, even if they work on the same content that we do. The only piracy we care about is the piracy of the content that we publish, and I believe that's a very generous stance.

There are no efforts as far as anyone can tell to get doujinshi licensed

Indeed, as far as anyone can tell. We can't announce deals that have yet to be confirmed. Funny you'd later bring up Comiket, but all I can say at this point is that you are very wrong in this assumption.

Jacob and his team have adamantly expressed their plans and it [expand beyond original-only works] won't be the case.

The first step is to remove all unlicensed content from the site, and currently, we (officially) only have a deal with Wani, who only do original content. You see a lot of nevers that were never there. That post you're quoting talks about how unlicensed doujinshi will be removed by the end of the year. No where have we said that we never want parody content back on the site again—and if we have, we were wrong, because we talked about it in a meeting just last week.

As others have pointed out, this will surely be harder to do than making deals with publishers and artists who produce original content. We can't promise that we will bring it back, since it's ultimately up to those who own the material—just like how an artist could (which luckily haven't happened so far) refuse us to publish their original book if they so wishes—but we will absolutely try.

One major advantage of scanlation is that if I want to translate something, I can just download it and start working on it. Unfortunately, the gears turn much slower when going through the proper channels, and while I know it's frustrating, we have to start with baby steps. We proved ourselves with the success of our books, which means we're now able to expand to the two biggest magazines in Japan, which is a huge step forward—the service will launch with more content that all our current books combined. As we grow, it will also become easier to grow further.

We can't provide it now, but our goal is to expand beyond commercial manga (i.e., doujinshi), as well as beyond the manga medium itself (this has already started with skateboards, but eventually anime, games, LN, etc.). Until we reach that point, we won't blame you for pirating, nor will we try to stop you. It can't be helped.

The amount of content that is being brought over by you guys feels like less than 1% of what has been removed as a result of these partnerships, and on top of that soon everything that isn't possible for you guys to monetize will be gone too. How has this entire thing not been seen as a net loss for the hentai community?

I don't have any problem w/ paying for H-works but my problem is that what we've giving up isn't even being returned to us at 50%. For every Napata or Homunculus there's many other artists who do not have any published works for us when before we would've been able to access their content now we cannot.

It could be a net loss cor the community if this were the only site you could find these. This clearly is not the case. A lot of the content here shows actually up much later than elsewhere, this is something I've noticed after the downloads were removed and I had to look for the new additions here on other sites (usually ex).

Yes, what they start with will only be a tiny amount compared to what will have to be removed, but the numbers will start to grow quickly again. I believe it was pointed out already that the two magazines they will start to simulpublish here will have about 40 new chapters per month. More books are coming in addition to this as well. And the magazines do also include many new artists, not just the big names you know.

The removal of the unlicensed doujinshi (For now it seems) only effects Fakku yes, but the wani/X-EROS/affiliates deal effected a lot more than just FAKKU. Those artists and their works are still basically impossible to find online and even when they do show up they get taken down immediately (Even from sites like ex.). And for many of those artists there is no legal/published course that I can pursue, they're just gone. It's -that- I take issue with more than the parody doujinshi thing. I'm basically being forced to watch all this content I would've previously had access to be deleted from the internet under the premise that MAYBE someday in the far future it might be available to be me again.

Ah, but the Wani takedowns came before the deal and were the main reason Fakku even came up with the idea to propose it. Admittedly, older content will take longer to come back, if at all, but with the start of the simulpublishing deal, we'll get to see a lot of the artists that even scanlators might have skipped in favor of the more popular ones as all chapters in the magazines will be translated.

It's been over 20 chapters in each magazine we've worked on so far, so it'll probably total around 50 per month, or 900-1,000 pages. Going forward, we're currently looking at a release schedule of around three weeks between books, adding another ~15 chapters to the monthly total.

Just curious, how will you handle HanaMan? Will you publish that as well? Considering the content...

We'll start with Kairakuten and X-Eros and then eventually expand to other magazines. I don't think there are any plans on where to go next, but I would imagine something like Shitsurakuten would get higher priority that Hana-Man.

Eh, Hanaman is like a tank made of regular magazine scans, a compilation. You would get the uncensored pages, might as well just wait for the tank period. Kairakuten Beast and eventually Shitsurakuten definitely take precedence.

That's why I asked if they are going to publish it.

This is distressing, to say the least. Fakku has been the greatest free hentai site on the web and is a prime choice for the great masses of people who refuse to pay for pornography. I suspect that Fakku is going to lose a good portion of its fans when it is no longer free. I think that you should at least allow there to be free accounts for people to post on the forums and submit ideas. Jacob, ol' boy... All I can say is, we had a good run.
