I watch anime at my own pace which involves pausing and rewinding a lot because I can't seem to read the subs fast enough and focus on the action on screen at the same time.Move away from the screen so it's easier to see both.
That won't make a difference. My problem is when I focus too much on the subtitles I miss everything else on screen regardless of how far I am away from the monitor. If I look at everything else I usually miss subtitles and don't know what the hell they said so it's basically a balancing act. This is why I don't mind English dubs (sometimes).

Everything you said. It got to the point where only me and a selected few ever showed up to the viewing - out of more than 20.

So I take it the last couple of seasons hadn't any. Well, among the numerous girly trios and clubs and slice of lives and whatnot that's been animated like hot pies lately it stands out.
