Sorry I just don't see how it would surpass what already is used. There are explosive shots used in nowadays chainguns and the reason for "it would look badass" is not something I take as a decision point.Sorry,
Just my imagination running wild.

Can understand that. In my case when it comes to military I'm a hardcore rationalist and evaluator. :)

Still though.
What are your thoughts about railguns, aka shells propelled with the power of magnets.

Railguns are pretty darn cool piece of technology. It's cousin a coilgun is already at the size of normal (though a bit bulky) rifle.
The theory behind it is efficient and interesting but the power resource so far do not have the power or scale to be practically used.
The drawback is that it's advanced technology thus prone to malfunctions. I don't know if we ever see them on battlefield in our lifetime, but the basics for railguns is already laid.

Yup. Good thing that theyre accurate pieces of weaponry.
Think about satelites armed with them. Both for ground bombardment and planetary defence.
Would be sweet.
But thats far in the future.
Until then, we can play with lasers.

I think it has been disproved that lasers known so far could have such destructive power on their own.
Also there is a treaty from I think 50's or 60's that forbids orbital weapon platforms.

Hmm. I though they didnt make em because of the cost. Well building one is easy, but how you rearm the bloody things?
Be prepared to sink millions in it.
But having a orbital weapon platform will give you an kickass advantage on the battlefield. You have artillery with you all the time.

Well actually the plans were to have nuclear bombing platforms to be exact.

Oh. They still have it do not worry.
Yup.
You can drop an old satelite on the battlefield and you got yourself an impact weapon.
How effective is it is another matter.

^That's kinda like HSST incident in Muv Luv minus tons of explosives and rocket boosters.Yup.
Orbital Bombardment.

Well, you guys seem to have had a nice discussion. I've got no opinion on orbital weapon platforms however.

Since orbital weapons aren't allowed, I would actually suggest having orbital drop pods instead. Troops can be deployed pretty fast away from home base and same goes for supplies and probably some other stuff.
0
The problem with that, I think, is both funding and training. Drop pods would probably be susceptible to damage during landing so you're either repairing them constantly after use or making them disposable in which case you're constantly making more. On top of that, you'll need to train soldiers in orbital drop landing maneuvers, which is probably a lot harder than it sounds. I imagine dropping through the atmosphere at intense speeds before hitting the ground solid like I see in them sci-fi movies/games can leave the occupants quite disoriented.
VAL'S NOTE: I'd like to note that these Ops would probably leave these soldiers deep in enemy territory which would most likely result in their deaths. Remember Market Garden?

I don't think humanity is at stage that would be in favour of adding a space warfare or use space in any tactical advantage other than satellites.

If we ever did go into space warfare in this lifetime, I assure you all that it would be messy, confusing and above all else, pointless.
