And as had been said by Zafhner, Reimu with homing option is generally considered the 'basic' and easier to adapt with most of starters. It's because;
- Reimu has the smallest hitbox, so she's generally safer when grazing bullets
- With homing, you can focus more on dodging and still hitting enemy with every shot.

Bringing this to a more logical plane of thought, note that HT was saying "get better at it", which means it was a joke aimed at people new to touhou, and not at veteran players.

I think it's more to illustrates the Gensokyo and real(our) world though.

Maybe ZUN wanted to tell us that people from Gensokyo won't fit to real (our) world's. Since there are many differences between like technological, cultures, and lifestyle...
And, people from real(our) world that have exceptional skill/ability (like Maribel for example) would slowly be attracted by Gensokyo and things.
