goodcall, anything that might be painful in your life that we could discuss...
edit: sorry, my reply was slightly harsh, just no need to ask a question with an obvious answer.

I would see the lottery results on the day before i travelled back in time,
then travel back in time a few hours back just to get the winning lottery ticket.

well basically i think nothing will change. Because if you did go back in time say to the time of George Washington. You are there to witness a historical event (Because you learned about it) and yet it happens differently than what you learned. Then you start to wan to change it to the one which you learned but if you think about it, you didn't altered any course of history; You were supposed to be there. You were fated to be there, you were meant to be the one that brought freedom to America so nothings changed yet because you went back in time that Washington was able to win the war if not he would have lost. Thus, you change the past but nothing actually changed.
Maybe it was too confusing?

If you beleive in fate, that might be the case. Anything you do in the past, you had already done to make the future, so there is nothing you can change in the past no matter what you do.
It really does depend on what you believe though. If you believe in the idea that everything that could ever possibly happen DID happen in some alternate strand of reality, and we simply experiance the most probable of events, then whatever you do makes no difference, and when returning to your own time, you just re-enter the most likely of worlds.
Another idea would be that by going back in time and change something, it just causes a split reality, like in the Back to the Future movies. Of course, in those movies, they claim to only have created one alternate reality in each movie, when they really would create dozens, most likely.
All of these are really just ways to reconcile what would paradox, because if you can't logically reconcile paradox, then either you don't exist anymore to cause it, or the universe doesn't exist anymore because you're a dick.

If I could go back in time, i'd go back to January 1st of 2008, 12:06 AM, so I could stop my own self from making the 'Joke from New Years Eve'. A huge mistake in my Life.
Though if I met with my own self, it could possibly lead to past-me asking questions about the future, thus changing my own history for my knowledge of time-travel will be known much earlier than the expected date. It could lead my past-me to discover time-travel at an earlier rate and redo something from his own past. Then it repeats again. past-me meets up with his past-me, his past-me discover time-travel earlier than the future-past-me and changes something again in the past including another past-me.....
uhh, it's confusing so here's the lowdown: If you ever make contact with your past, an unstoppable chains of events involving you changing your own past could happen.
.... I guess changing the "joke from New Years Eve" is impossible after all >_>

the simplest explanation would be that by travelling back to time you "create" a new universe that goes about its own course. i mean, how could you say the future was altered anyway? its not like you are there to see it if you re in the past...

But I can't say it's any more likely than several other ideas on the subject. Also...we can't ACTUALLY travel through time, and we don't know if we ever will. So let's cross that bridge when we find it.

(Bringing back a Page 2 thread, but this is an interesting topic.)
I've thought about this often. I've done a lot of things back in High School that I greatly regret (Which I don't want to discuss,) and I always ask myself how life might be right now if I could stop myself from doing those things. Same thing with the Internet; There are quite a few IM's I wish I had never taken part in.
But then I think a little more, and realize that if I hadn't done them at that point, what would've stopped me from doing them now and possibly getting in even deeper trouble?
As much as I'd love to zoom back and kick the crap out of myself, you have to just take the good with the bad.
Or maybe Science will advance that far someday.

I like the "well it would cause X so it wouldn't matter" arguments when if you want to get all uptight about the logic you'd just say that actually going back in time to redo past events is impossible in the first place. And don't say that quantum physics allows for it some shit like that because the actual allowance for "time travel" isn't the cartoon "OMG Dinosaurs!" scenario people think it means.
I don't think I'd go back in time if I could. Unless I could somehow take my brain back and turn into a kid again then redo kindergarten with a university level intellect. I'm sure I'd deeply regret it by the time I turned 6 and was being constantly shoved in front of a camera to read Chaucer or something but it'd be cool to be able to appreciate my childhood as an adult.
