Alice in Wonderland

Why does Tim Burton always cast Johnny Depp? It's not a bad thing; Johnny Depp makes Burton's movies awesome, but why is he in (almost) every Tim Burton movie?Because Depp will do it, and people eat Depp up. It's pretty much a guaranteed cash cow. Burton with his grimdark stuff is a good shot at making money, and Depp is a good shot with anything he does. Put them together, and it becomes a sure thing.
About this movie, my brother saw a commercial for it and pointed something out to me - it seems like Depp plays a very big role in this movie, as if it revolves around him. But he's the Mad Hatter, who really doesn't do very much in the story. He's in one scene, really. So, is this movie going to be nothing at all like the real Alice in Wonderland, or are all the trailers and buzz a giant lie, with Depp being in the movie for maybe ten minutes?

It's a sequel to the original story as Alice is 19 in this film. She finds herself back in "Wonderland" shortly after her fathers funeral. She has forgotten her visit from ten years ago, but the inhabitants of Wonderland haven't forgotten her.
The Mad Hatter asks for Alices help in overthrowing the Red Queen, who has taken control of Wonderland from the White Queen. And the adventure begins.

So is this even related to the books at all?If what Tsujoi is saying is true, then it doesn't seem like it. :/

more like a dark, brooding, comical sequel to me.
i just wanna see how they try to focus on alice but move their attention to the mad hatter.
and again, Helena Bonham Carter, ladies and gents.

It sounds like an extension to the books.

I dont really care if its loyal to the book at all (frankly i never really liked it to be honest) im just interested in what kind of dark and twisted interpretation of the story by Burton, if its the likes of Sweeney Todd or corpse bride, im gonna buy myself a ticket or most realistically download it.

I can understand coming up with a new story, but couldn't they have changed the name? Made it Alice's Return to Wonderland or something? Then, people wouldn't have been sitting on their hands all these months, expecting a new interpretation of the Alice books.

Well to be fair, Alice in Wonderland isn't even the book's title.
And the story has been re-imagined so many times, I don't even care anymore.

Depp is typed-cast as a crazy guy, can anybody honestly remember when Depp wasnt playing a crazy or messed up character? I heard somewhere that Tim Burton is remaking Beetlejuice, dont know if its true or not but I assure you Depp will play beetlejuice.

Does anyone else not like where they're going with this? I saw a trailer today and it looks so lame. Alice in Wonderland? Johnny Depp? Tim Burton? It's every bit as contrived and exploitive as Twilight.
I think they're taking way too many creative liberties, on an intellectual property that's already seen too many remakes and adaptations to begin with, does anyone else think this?

Just in case some users aren't aware, here's a picture how the queen is portrayed by TB.
My reaction...
Seriously Disney, are you sure this was a good idea?

That's the word I kept trying to think of - contrived!
Yeah, this reeks of companies trying to steal money from fans. Fans of Alice in Wonderland (the classic Disney animated version), fans of Tim Burton, fans of Johnny Depp, fans of that Hot Topic "it's black and moody, so it must be cool" bullshit. Although I guess you can't really "steal" money from them, but it still feels like stealing to me.
I think what really pushed me over the edge was Helena Bonham Carter was the Red Queen. I could understand Depp and Burton working together again because they seem to love doing it, but adding Carter to the mix? It just makes it obvious that they want to get certain people excited and see the movie.
Tim Burton + Johnny Depp + Helena Bonham Carter = dark, funny, and will make your parents nervous. You don't even need to work on a script! That's enough to get people in the seats!

If only the film had a score comprised entirely of Dubstep and a couple Hunter S. Thompson allusions, it'd be the indie movie of the century, even with the Disney backing!
You said they don't need a script for it to sell, and that was exactly my point; the film doesn't have a script. It's just a bunch of crap you could have fit into any other movie and maybe broke even for the filmmakers, but because Johnny Depp et al are doing it, the film will be a soulless box office monster. Nevertheless, glad to see I'm not alone in thinking this.
