hi, obviously im new to this forum, but im really surprised there is a section for culinary arts here!in either case, i made sambal chicken before. but im wondering if you would know how to make the sauce from scratch rather than just buying it.
also, would you have any tips on decorating a cake using the tips? i tried using them, but i can never make a leaf.
Sambal is one of the things that's best purchased. It's probably a lot cheaper, too.
And cake decorating is something I've never been good at. If you want shapes for cakes, I wouldn't use frosting, but marzipan instead. Stuff's made for shapes and junk.
hmm sambal chicken eh. im an indonesian and indonesian make the best sambal in the world.basically sambal is just 7:3:1 part of hot burning indonesian rawit chili, garlic and shrimp paste.dissolve it with a bit of water, add salt and there you go!authentic and simple indonesian sambal.there is actually more types of sambal but i'll only tell you the basic sambal this time.
Despite being an Indonesian, I can't stand sambal... its way to spicy for my stomach...
Sometimes I just used the more mild sambal bangkok...
Is there any alternatives?

Well, seeing as I've got no money right now, do you have any recommendations for cheap, healthy food? I'm not much of a salad person either. Anything that will save me some money and doesn't come straight out of a can/package would be greatly appreciated.

you know, throw all kinds of cheap fruit to the blender, add some ice and sugar to your liking.
voila.cheap and healthy.
or veggie soup.
slice carrot, spinach, broccoli, tomato and other cheap veggie.
grind some garlic,onion,chili,salt,pepper.
boil some water in a pot and add some chicken stock.
when the water's boiling, throw all the remaining ingredients to the pot.
stir well for a while(not too long,about 2 minutes)
voila.cheap and healthy.

Well, I've got another question, does anyone know what I could do with a hell of a lot of blueberries? I live in the middle of nowhere, and there are blueberries all over the place. Anything would be helpful, pies, sauce, and whatever else.

well,because nikon is busy,i'll answer those q's...
@blurr
well, you could add bacon and mushroom to the french tosat, but you could only sandwich it because the bacon and mushroom won't stick to the egg mix.
but maybe you could add some flour to thicken the egg mix so that the mushroom and bacon will stick to the mix.
@calla12345
well, you could always eat salads,duh...just play a bit with the dressing and you'll get a good salad.

Know any good Gumbo recipes? Ones that you've tried and know are good?but i add some of my personal twists into it.
# 1 1/2 cups crabmeat
# 1 cup of cockles meat
# 2 pounds shrimp, in shells
# 3 quarts water
# 1 small bay leaf
# 1 lemongrass
# 5 teaspoons of finely chopped scallion for garnish
# 1 teaspoon lemon juice
# 1 small onion, cut in wedges
# salt, sugar and black pepper to taste
# parsley, thyme and oregano to taste
# 2 pounds okra, sliced
# 4 tablespoons bacon grease, divided
# 4 tomatoes, peeled & chopped
# 2 onions, finely chopped
# 2 green peppers, finely chopped
# 2 potatoes, rough-cut boil for 1/2 mins
# 1 carrot, rough-cut boil for 1/2 mins
# 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper, or to taste
# 1/2 teaspoon of chopped ginger
# 2 cloves of garlic, grind
# 4 tablespoons brown roux
# reserved shrimp stock
# 2 tablespoon of indian curry powder
In a large Dutch oven boil the water with bay leaves, lemongrass, lemon juice, onion wedges, salt, pepper, and parsley. Wash shrimp and add to pot; boil for 2 minutes. Peel shrimp and return shells to the stock for later use. Put shrimp and crab meat in refrigerator until ready to add to the gumbo.
Saute okra in 2 tablespoons bacon grease in large heavy skillet. The okra will turn darker as it cooks. When okra is soft, transfer to a stew pot and add tomatoes. Stir and mix together well. Clean skillet and heat remaining 2 tablespoons bacon grease. Sauté the chopped onion, ginger, garlic, potato, green pepper, and red pepper. When soft, add to the stew pot.
In a saucepan, warm the roux; strain shrimp stock and stir into the roux. When well-blended, add to the large stew pot with the other ingredients. Add the curry powder. Bring to a boil and simmer for 1 1/2 hours, adding more strained stock if needed. Taste and add salt, pepper, sugar, thyme, oregano and parsley to taste. Simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours longer; add the shrimp, cockles and crab meat and cook for 10 more minutes.
Serve with fresh steamed rice in soup bowls. Garnish with scallion.
Serves 7 to 10.
enjoi.
