I have a bitcoin wallet... but no money in BTC. I'll have to get some when there's something I can use them for that I want.

Its potential is very much debatable, since transacting with it is very much different from using online payment methods like Paypal. If I remember correctly, Bitcoin transactions can be done anonymously, meaning nobody would ever know you spent Bitcoins on something...
