Free Programs That Do Cool Things

Don't forget about Jdownloader the most insane way to power download off megaupload or rapidshare. It is basically a program that allows you to copy like all 24 links of a series at once, it will check if they are alive, and download automatically even putting in the password. You can also change how much bandwidth you give the program so you can set it low and launch a good online game or keep it wrenched if you are in photoshop or something irrelevant to the internet.

it does (usually) have the latest version of many popular programs, but that is not even the most awesome thing about it!
The awesome thing about it, is that you can check off all the programs you want, and then download a single installer for all of them. This makes it especially good for reinstalling a computer where you need all of your standard programs downloaded.

Synergy is a pretty nice program: http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/

It lets you share a single mouse, keyboard, and clipboard(copy and paste) between separate computers(regardless of the OS difference between the two). I have it running all the time as my workspace is made up of my desktop and laptop sitting to the side of my monitor on a base. I no longer have to lean towards the laptop every time i need to type =P. Combine it with something like Dropbox to sync your work files between the two and you've got a nice little combo.

A few other programs not listed here and come to mind that i use are:

MP3 tag - http://www.mp3tag.de/en/

Allows for easy tagging of music files

Unlocker - http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

Allows you to bypass that annoying message that a file is being used when trying to delete it, but you know damn well it isn't =P

Malwarebytes - http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Extremely good anti-malware progam.

Make MKV - http://www.makemkv.com/

Really easy tool for turning your DVDs(and Bluray also, while it's still in beta) into .MKV files

I'll likely come back with some more when i can get back to my desktop(my main work station).

Synergy = <3

When it comes to anonymous browsing, I suggest checking out Tor. It's not the Holy Grail but it might be better than nothing. Makes your connection slow though. Small price to pay for anonymity right?

You reminded me of some other cool tool which really helps if your Windoze is infected. It helps not only against Malware but also against Spyware, Trojans, Adware, Hijackers... etc.

Spybot S&D - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html

Free Undelete - Office Recovery
Simple and easy program that let's you try to recover deleted files from a certain location.

Not very powerful, but for recently deleted files it does work.

Indeed Malwarebytes and Spybot are both pretty good, thou i have to say i like Malwarebytes more.

foobar2k definitely has my approval. I have no idea why the changed the quicksearch, though. It used to come to the front whenever you pressed the hotkey for it, and then the window would go away once you've selected your song. Now it does neither, really I have no idea why they changed it. Great application though. Winamp was good but it kept bugging out on me time after time.

RICEFAGGOTRY:

RocketDock - it's a dock.

RainMeter - makes your desktop look pretty, provides information, and there are many add-ons (called skins).

Sorry if these have been posted.

Fileuploader:

Supports a bunch of filehosts and allows you to upload files directly to the site.

Generally makes uploading stuff easier =]

Amazing open-source software

Miro
Video Player and Bittorrent Client. Supports .mkv and .avi without any extra codec pack installations, haven't seen any tearing or downsides to it so far, shows subs perfectly as well. Also has support for Video RSS feeds. Relies on open-source codecs for playback as well, including a lot of the codecs found in CCCP.

Miro Video Converter
Convert almost any video to MP4, Ogg Theora, or Apple formats.

SkipScreen
A Firefox extension that skips unnecessary clicks and wait times on Rapidshare, Megaupload, Mediafire, zShare, and more.

Thunderbird
E-Mail client from the developers of Firefox, Mozilla.

RSSOwl
Self-explanatory.

Cabos
Gnutella network P2P client. - Though I don't recommend using the Gnutella network to download anything, since Limewire is shutting down, this might appease some people looking for a better client.

AbiWord
Leaner and faster than OpenOffice. Word-editing program only, this is not a giant suite like OpenOffice.

Juice
The best podcasting client out there

Paint.NET
Lighter and faster than GIMP, with many of the same functions. Requires .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 or higher.

Inkscape
Vector Graphics application. Definitely one of the better ones.

Filezilla
By far the best FTP-Client.

Peazip
Fantastic archiving utility to extract and pack archives of an extensive amount of formats. PeaZip also features password protecting archives, keyfile support, system integration, a lovely interface, and much more. Includes .7zip/.kgb compression as well.

One that just came to mind is Unlocker, which solves the 'cannot delete, file in use' variety of error message by identifying processes which are using the file/folder, and then letting you end them or delete on startup. Free and lightweight; the sort of thing that you use infrequently, but that it's always useful to have.

holy crap yes!
will it work on files that say they "cannot read file from source or disk"? One of those is loitering on my desktop.
