1. I don't like touch screens, my finger juices get on them.
2. It seems fun to play around with, but does that justify its 500 dollar price tag? Me thinks not.
3. I already have a laptop.
Also, you should never buy Apple products when they're fist released, because it's inevitable that they'll produce a superior version within a year.

A product refresh on an annual basis is a lot slower than competitors. What other company have such a tiny product line and only refreshes once a year?

If I may make the argument that there are many things you don't "need" until you start using it. I honestly doubt I'd "need" my computer if I'd never started using one in the first place.

That's not a very good analogy for PCs since we're living in an era where we pretty much can't get by without using our computers. I mean, so many things we do in College are only done through a PC.
What you're saying is certainly a valid argument for the iPad though. I'm quite sure I can do quite well without an iPad since my MacBook Air is pretty much just as thin and a fully functional computer. The iPad is not a necessity, but a luxury item. However, for the convenience and features it can offer at $499, it's a good buy for a lot of people including me. That's where the consumer base for this product is.

i dont know what to say, but it looks nice im so done using windows anyway's. i compared computer's with a girlfriend of mine, apple vs. microsoft i felt defeated the MAC started wwaaayy quicker, colors look so much better , skinny like a model's waist line , longer battery life(about 10 hours while mine only does 4) and the bitch got a free ipod touch,WTF?

If you install an SSD into your Windows-based PC, it will be just as fast. Don't assume Macs are just magically better. It just so happens the come default with better parts since you pay more. Upgrading your PC will fix that.
You can't help the battery life though. Mac OS X has excellent battery management built-in so even if you have the same battery, Windows will just drain it faster.

I admit that the iPad can be used for "real work," but there's nothing you did on it that I can't do on my lap-top. The iPad may be more portable, but I wouldn't spend 500 smackers just for a smaller, sleeker, Laptop. In my eyes the iPad is more of a toy then anything else. Yes, you can do real work on it. Does that mean you will? In my case, probably not.

In your eyes tablets are amazing, they are the bright future of the tech world, the little apple in Steve Job's eye. In my eyes they're just another fad. Perhaps they really will be the future, or perhaps they'll just be tossed aside like so many other things over the years. Time will tell.
The iPad is not a necessity, but a luxury item.
I suppose this would be my point. That the iPad is not needed for daily life, my Mac Book Pro, on the other hand, is. As I said before, I can't justify spending 500 dollars for a another "laptop." Even if I had a spare 500 lying around, I still wouldn't spend it on a iPad. If I did not have a laptop the iPad would look very nice indeed. But I do have a laptop, and I don't need another one.
Oh, by the way, your blog posts are enjoyable, I should read them more often.

Spoiler:
Yeah, mostly the same as what I replied to Tegumi. You don't have to buy the iPad, but a lot of people will. Apple does sell more iPads than all their Macs plus together because it's simply much easier to use an iPad instead of a laptop in a lot of situations, especially considering how thin and light the iPad is.
As for whether the tablet is the future or not, it's fairly apparent to me that they are. If you look at Android 3.0 which is specifically designed for tablet computing, you can really see we're moving in the direction I predicted in my blog post many months ago. I'm especially careful when I say things and just like how almost everything in my Madoka Magica post came true, I'm confident everything in my Tablet computing post will come true also.
Don't forget, when the first graphical user interface and the mouse was introduced, everyone called it a fad since you can't do 'real work' like DOS can.
Don't forget, when the first TV came out, everyone called it a fad that people will get over in a few months.
We need to be careful people don't laugh at us in ten years.

The only thing to justify getting an Ipad over the other tablets on the market imo is the app store really.

I knew you would be all over this one, Imperial. Just got through commenting on my own blog about it.
Sadly, just like the Ipad, it just doesn't interest me. Don't get me wrong, the product is nice and would be nice to play with the ios (since I never owned a Apple OS based product, not that I don't want to. I don't show favoritism toward any OS)the price tag is just nagging at me and nothing my laptop can't do that the Ipad2 does. I'm still baffled at how many people waited outside on launch day for the Ipad to get one (and some idiot broke his just for the hell of it) despite the price.
Other than price, doesn't seem like you can add any other peripherals (like flash drives, etc, but I could be wrong.) I mean, I can see why, but to me it is much easier and quicker in situations where it would advantageous. Won't put it pass Job's if he had a Ipad 3 in the wings and add more features. I don't know, I may come around to the Ipad, but not at the moment. Guess, I'm wary of Tablets in general, lol.

I'm hugely impressed by the civil nature of this thread. Golly, F! can really change for the better in one year and I'm pleasantly surprised. The original iPad thread I made last year in this very same section had the same quality posts as IB. I initially put a thread here for the lulz but it's actually turning out quite good.
I still haven't gotten all the -Rep I received from the original thread back yet though. xD
Yeah, pretty much this. It's the same as the iPhone as well. Android really is quite a lot superior to iOS in terms of functionality right now. I mean, I completely despise iOS's notifications system.
However, it should also be considered that Android 3.0 is in a mess. It just came out and it's the only Android release made specifically for tablets, and not only do they only have less than 100 apps in the marketplace, the entire interface just isn't quite right yet. If you look at the Motorola Xoom, you'll know what I mean. It's the only Android 3.0 tablet that's commercially available at the current date. I'm not blaming Google or anything. They've only had about two months since their first release, and the iPad has been around since April 2010.
Anyway, the iPad should be credited for sparking this boom in the tablet industry. Macs defined personal computing as we know it today as it was the first commercially available computer with the GUI and the mouse back in 1984. Even though it's the pioneer, today it merely has 10% marketshare. I see the iPad with the same manner and I do believe that Tablet computing is the way to go in the future. As more Android tablets are released (Galaxy Tab 2 is the most recent one) and people keep buying them, this market will keep growing, and the iPad really is the catalyst of all that.
If you're interested, I talk about these ideas in detail on my blog.
P.S. I bought the Oatmeal book, btw.

Again, the same as Tegumi and Cormac. You're one of those people who don't have a need for this third category of devices that sit in the middle of your smartphone and laptop. That's perfectly fine. I mean, I wouldn't pay $499 for something I'm not going to use. Of course, I'm almost certain that if you did shell out $499 for it, you would use it and realize just how convenient it is to use. You will definitely carry your laptop around less and less. The touch screen UI, the thinness, as well as the battery life are of the essence.
As above, I would like to direct your attention to these two blog posts.

Read the topics and not going lie: You made some validate statements, however again I need time on it. Since I'm not the most sociable or roaming type and don't need much of my gear expect my phone (in case I have emergency like stuck on the side on the road or in accident) I feel like it would be a waste on me. Only time I need computer is if go on a trip or at school and have some free time in which to do work or something...other than that when I'm at home and use it the most, I would reach for my laptop since it is easier to do more things at once.
Another thing that bugs me, not the Ipad exactly, is that it seems like Job's is ready to release the next product. So seems like to me, unless I get it as a gift, best not get anything else until you see what new product "insert name here is and what it does." Again, you make some good points and might be onto something, but at the moment; nothing I can get behind until I learn for myself. It very well could be something that is the next paradigm shift to new heights in technology and way of thinking and using it, but also could be another everyday tool.

I'm going to quote myself here for those people who didn't read my blog posts.
In every way, the iPad has served the exact same purpose as the Mac did – to push this World in the right direction, and a brighter future. We take everything for granted nowadays – never remembering that that fact we are only able to use computers today because of the Mac in 1984. In twenty years, we will all own tablets with a multi-touch user interface. It’s not likely that many people will remember the iPad’s contribution to this revolution either.
Throughout my iPad articles, there has never been an intention to sell you an iPad. The sole purpose of this batch of articles is to allow you, the reader, to understand just what purpose the iPad is serving, and hopefully remember it as more and more tablets being manufactured and purchased. The tablet revolution has been sparked, just like how the PC revolution was sparked in 1984 by the Mac. Sparking this revolution was the iPad’s purpose, and the World has been pushed towards a new future. A future of tablet computing and multi-touch.
I wrote this back in June last year and look, Google released Android 3.0 for tablets this January. Trust me - the future of tablets is fast approaching.
Not to worry. It doesn't matter if you buy an iPad now or not. In ten years you'll just naturally buy a tablet, even if it's not an iPad, just like my article predicts. The iPad is merely a catalyst to drive the World towards that direction.

When there's money to be made, other companies will join in to get a slice. It'll keep happening until the market is literally overflooded with similar items. At that point, when there is no more money to be made, firms will then leave that market.
$500 course right there.

looking over things recently, i can see how this would be cool, but it's nothing but a damn money sink tbh. No internet kinda defeats the point in using this over my laptop, and i'm not in a university town or somewhere that I get wifi everywhere. So until I can tether this with my phone for 3G, no go.
And the 3G version may as well not exist. Fuck AT&T.
