Hmm...looks like I spoke too soon. The quality of the posts in this thread has pretty much dropped to the level of the original iPad thread.
Although it's sad to see that Page 1 is the only page with comments worth reading. Page 2 is nothing better than IB. Now that we're on the third page, I still have hope that F! has more intelligent posters like those in Page 1. If there are any more of you out there, feeI free to comment. I'll still reply to the posts that don't reek of IB or idiocy.
Like?
And the 3G version may as well not exist. Fuck AT&T.
AT&T actually has quite a good coverage, although I can't say that they are perfect. You can obviously opt to go with Verizon if AT&T isn't very good in your area.
Also, the weight and battery life of the iPad, as well the form factor makes this more portable and easily accessible to laptops. This is why the tablet form factor exists, really.
You guys are in the wrong section. There's a thread for the iPad 2 in IB. Please take your comments over there. I didn't make two threads for nothing.

looking over things recently, i can see how this would be cool, but it's nothing but a damn money sink tbh. No internet kinda defeats the point in using this over my laptop, and i'm not in a university town or somewhere that I get wifi everywhere. So until I can tether this with my phone for 3G, no go.And the 3G version may as well not exist. Fuck AT&T.

Curious and Wondering
I just got recently issued a company-only iPad. Now there's an iPad 2, and comparing its specs and performance rating on engadget with the iPad that I have, *sigh* they could have held out a little bit further for it.
iPad 2's lighter, faster and has a cover. And it comes in white. Maybe I'll buy it when it comes out on the Philippine market.

Coverage and speed doesn't mean shit without stability. I left them for metro and then later verizon, and I'm never looking back. Despite that, I'd like to add that Verizon's 3G option for this kinda sucks too. Horrible limitations, and it's very expensive, to boot. I'd rather just root my android and get an app for wireless tethering.
General usage, I'd still prefer using my computer, but the main thing I'm looking at here is battery life when traveling, since the computer's not going to last for 7-10 hour car trips.
Anyway, I pretty much decided what I'm going to do: Pick up a refurb first gen model, since the price dropped to 349. We'll see how that goes.

The iPad 2 to the iPad is like the iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 3G. It's nothing radical - merely a performance boost. The next iPad is going to have the ground-breaking stuff, such as say...a Retina Display? :D
Yes, the iPad 2 is very fast and is a fabulous kit, but I don't think it justifies a purchase for someone with an original iPad. The original iPad is nothing slow, as you know very well.

Why would you even bother tethering if you can just surf the web on your phone? On the go, I'd really just use my iPhone 4 rather than tethering it to the iPad. I mean, my original iPad isn't even a 3G model, and when I buy the iPad 2 I'm not going to get the 3G version either. I'm going to leave everything about mobile internet to my iPhone 4. The iPad is really used for the purposes I described in my blog post. Really, just use it in the house where you just want a quick, fluid and natural access to the Internet without going to your computer.
Depending on what you do, you may find the refurb to be a good choice. I mean, my iPad did everything I needed it to do perfectly, and I'm sure my needs won't be that much different to yours, as long as we both understand what the tablet form factor exist for.

With all the complaining about lack of USB and SD expansion slots and zero multi-tasking, I'm surprised that people aren't looking at alternative products. Like say, the HP Slate. The thing runs a full version of Windows 7, has a 1.6 GHz processer, 1Gb of RAM, and either 32 or 64Gb of flash memory that can be used for either memory or storage. The only real downside that I can see to the Slate is that it's 5 hour battery life really does limit it on longer trips.

Perhaps I am missing something about tablets in general, but wouldn't a netbook be about the same size, perhaps a little heavier, and have more firepower then a tablet?

battery. the 3G connection on my phone is nice, but the battery gets massacred by web usage -- browsing, IM, IRC, etc. That was the whole reason why i started tethering the connection to my laptop to begin with - I'd rather not have my phone drop dead.
Most places I'd be using this at anyways have wifi now anyways, so there's not a huge emphasis on this, I just having all grounds covered.
Anyway, can't wait to give this thing a test run once I get it. I'll let you know that goes.

I would get this as a toy. The only real use I can think of it would be to upload my pictures and then use it in my Photography Club to show off my shots.
Also, the Apple motto you have as your signature is not grammatically correct. It should be "Think Differently."

Let me ask you this question, why do you want Windows 7 on a tablet? What advantages does it offer? Absolutely none. It simply feels more awkward than using a mouse or a trackpad for input. Windows applications are written for one cursor to be directed by the mouse/trackpad, and not for your five fully flexible fingers.
A new form factor requires a new OS, and that is precisely iOS and Android 3.0. These OSs are specifically designed for the tablet's bane of existence - to fully support Multi-touch and to run apps designed for Multi-touch. This is the kind of apps I'm talking about. Microsoft just doesn't get it - Windows 7 is a desktop-class OS. It's designed for mice and trackpads, but not for your fingers. They just don't understand the purpose of the tablet.
As for you worrying about the specs...that should be the least of your worries, really. Specs do not decide a how good a kit is, especially in this form factor. Since the HP Slate runs Windows, it should only be fair to compare it to something else that runs a Desktop-Class OS, such as a MacBook Air, which is thinner and far more powerful.

Ah, I see. This makes a lot of sense. The iPhone 4's battery can barely hold up for an entire day and it's probably got one of the best batteries amongst smartphones today.
Well, the iPad is sure to impress when it comes to battery. You won't be disappointed. I know first hand just how good it is. xD
