Yes and It's better without reps. Now my Opinion:
An example for my opinion, when I made a negative post against owning pets, I got -2 reps. I just stated my opinion (not flaming, attacking, or trolling, at CTFG) and some users went butthurt for someone not sharing their beliefs. So if people are given -reps because of their beliefs/opinions not being liked, why should we measure the user in terms to their point count?
Not to remember I have seen some old topics on IB (searching for topics) where butthurt users made flame topics to OWN more -reps. So by intending to make them butthurt with -reps, the less mature/bright do not get the message of doing it wrong and go in a shitty vengeance acquire ragequit/ban and/or anger the community (troll/flame).
Overall, let the rep system drown. Users should be themselves, with a degree of consideration to not flame/troll/etc, and not be intimidated from posting by a mere number, but by their own reasoning which tells them if they should post or not.
Frankly, I could post more, but I don't, because I know there is no gain or loss from posting. So I just stick to stating my opinion, giving advice, and/or sharing some links.
I support SolidShark with his statements.
We all have Freedom of Speech and all these other rights, but some try to drown others by stupid ways. There is some abuse of power and people will do that if it's for their side. But then they go crying when it hits them. I agree with SolidShark.

Personally, I'm not sure why the reputation system was even invented. Did it ever have a purpose? Like discounts at the Fakku! store, or exclusive features? Otherwise, I agree with both of these people, it's just a clusterfuck of a system, which results in the 'most popular' being high repped, and the 'most hated' being neg repped. Not a very nice system at all.

Now there's people abusing it because their "buddies" like stoking their dick...
[EDIT] If a large group of people are against your ideas, then you know you said something retarded...

Spoiler:
You make a good point about the abuse of power, it's a problem that I think needs to be somehow address, but you also make a good point about large groups of people usually being correct when against someone.
That is, if the majority vs the minority battle is a case where the majority is in the right. There are, rare occasions, where the minority is in the right and the majority just refuses to accept it, for whatever reasons.
Anyway, thanks for your reply. Rather eye-opening.

I've been on here for three years and have only seen maybe two cases of abuse, one of which was when Jacob fired up that new unlimited system which got shot down pretty quickly.
Most people complaining about the rep system are complaining about negatives being needlessly demoralising- but during that time of insane rep abuse, everyone got blasted by nothing but ups.

Personally, I think it's better this way because people always like to pick on the new guy O_O.Not really. Only if they go to IB and say something stupid.
I seriously don't know why IB is such a noob magnet. First time I came here the only section that I don't go frequently is the one that says "lacking intelligence" and just hang out at sections where I know I'm comfortable without even trying.

The reason which why new users get blasted so much is because they rarely bother to look around or actually read the rules. Granted, I never read the rules at first (I read it later just out of curiosity), but most of the rules are common sense.I think it'd be common sense to observe a new environment (new forum) before posting. Sadly, common sense is rather uncommon.

Exactly why I like ib. I can circlejerk without even trying. And we get to make idiots ragequit.
But I still stand by my point that it helped noobs realise they were doing something wrong... Seriously, you tell them they are retarded and they don't get the picture... You call them retarded, and they have -10 rep, they flip shit, and/ or finally get the picture.
More fun when they flip shit, though

There's many cases of CTFG users repping each other, and maybe the grapes in IB...
I also love how a user makes a huge scene over a single -rep. It usually follows by more negs...

My best guess is that they see it as a forum in which retardation, being silly and being literally incoherant is allowed without negative consequences.
When they get flamed to the extent that their ignorance cherries get popped annihilated, it makes for some good lulz. Especially when they return to do an Illumia/Koko.
