Kick-Ass

Ok at first I thought this movie was gonna be so fucking dumb but then I watched a trailer with Hit girl and big daddy.... Needless to say I now am reserving my judgment.

I watched it yesterday and it's fucking amazing. It is a comedy, but in a natural way - sort of like how Pulp Fiction is frequently being funny but not in a LOOK AT ME I AM BEING FUNNY way, like a Ben Stiller movie. Primarily it's an action film and I can honestly say it has some of the best action scenes I have ever seen. There's a scene towards the end that has Hit-Girl taking out a roomful of armed gangsters in a pitch black room. It goes from John Woo style "gun ballet" to what's essentially an FPS from her point of view as she wears night vision goggles to an extreme slow motion shot which is only lit by the flashes of her gun being fired.
When you're watching Kick-Ass and his friends talk, it's like you're watching a buddy movie. When you're watching Hit-Girl and Big Daddy fight, it's like you're watching an anime or Hong Kong action movie. When you're watching Kick-Ass go around trying to be hero, it's like a black comedy about a well-meaning but perhaps pretty deluded guy. Everything it does, it does well. The romance works and doesn't feel tacked on, like you'd get in a Hollywood movie. The humour doesn't overshadow or detract from the story and action.
You have to remember, too, that this is based on a comic written by a British guy, the screenplay is written by two Brits, the director is British, Kick-Ass is played by a Brit and the main bad guy is played by a Brit. The movie is an independent film, not a huge studio movie. That gives them a lot of creative freedom and it also means they're not cursed with the usual Hollywood bullshit like having to cater to toy manufacturers' wishes or having really forced humour and romance.

Yeah that scene's awesome, though still nowhere near the awesomeness of some of the other fight scenes.
The Daily Mail is a British paper known for being a load of conservative, reactionary fuckwits. Here's their entertaining review of Kick-Ass.

Some choice quotes:
This crime against cinema is twisted, cynical, and revels in the abuse of childhood
It deliberately sells a perniciously sexualised view of children
this grotesque glorification of prematurely sexualised, callously violent children
Worldwide child pornography is a multi-billion dollar industry. In Africa and South America, brutalised youngsters who kill and rape are rightly feared as members of feral gangs or child soldiers.

Finally got around to seeing this yesterday, and it's just brilliant. Switches between the hilariously absurd and sickeningly dark with startling regularity; violent scenes alternate between ridiculous and serious, so you get to a point where you don't know whether to laugh or cry. It's also gloriously colourful and vibrant, and the formulaic superhero movie structure does nothing to detract from the means by which the 'plot' is played out. The beginning bit is a bit awkward and cliché, and what story it has is dragged out over a long period, but it's an experience as much as anything. Really good stuff.

I want to see the movie really badly. I like superhero movies, so this will be an interesting change from Iron Man and Spider Man.

I saw it last night. Kick-Ass is just absolutely kickass!
It started off so slow I was thinking "Oh crap, what am I doing wasting $8.00 on another generic action hash movie." But just wow. I loved it. One of those great guilty pleasures. Oh sure, it had a semblance of a story hidden in there somewhere, but they kept it in the background where it belonged and by the time you got into the movie you didn't care what it was. It wasn't by any means a good movie in the sense of trying to dice it up as anything more than a no-holds bar action flick, but that is fine by me.

A few things I disliked about the movie.
Everything else was good though.
