Megadeth or Metallica
I prefer...

Ahh... What a question. I myself have been more of a Megadeth fan, and don't have any Metallica anymore. People say that the bands are highly similar, but I have trouble finding similarity's.
Besides, Megadeth did an awesome Duke Nukem 3D Theme cover (Grabbag by Lee Jackson), so they instantly win.

I think people compare them because they were part of the big four bands of Thrash. That and because of the ejection of Dave from the group.
I listen to both, although I have more Megadeth songs than Metallica.

Cliff Burton was the most talented member of Metallica, in terms of writing music, in my opinion. I think that during his days in the band, they are head and shoulders above Megadeth. In the later era, they aren't so good, but I'm not a huge fan of Megadeth. Songs like "Peace Sells" and "Symphony of Destruction" aren't really to my taste.
Metallica has some rough songs, and some bad songs, but I really enjoy the style of guitar and bass playing especially on such songs as "Fade to Black", "One", and "Anesthesia".

There's no way I could say that one's better than the other, I fucking hate to compare music.
But still, Metallica wins my vote, even though the time of St. Anger was really really (and I mean really really) awful.
But I'm still glad they replaced Jason with Robert.
Fingerstyle > Pick.
And his faces are epic.

Metallica was once my favorite band. Back in the day. But all in all i have to go with Megadeth. Mainly because of St.Anger. Megadeth kept doing what they do best. And they're still doing it.
On a side note i think Megadeth had more kick ass album titles and covers. "Peace Sells, But who's buying?","Symphony of destruction" and Rude awakening. But i just liked the album cover of that one. hehehe.

what they have in common is that they are both responsible for most of the metal bands that play today.

Metallica turned to crap when Mustaine was kicked out imo
Then he made Megadeth... so my vote's definitely for Megadeth

In sound, speed and quality (averagely) I would choose Megadeth.
But Metallica is like the Nirvana of metal. It was the poster child that made the genre more mainstream. Then the Black Album came out.

I never really liked Metallica, though their first few albums are at least worth some praise.
Megadeth was never under my favorites either, but at least I like/liked some of their stuff so my vote goes to them. And especially their recent efforts were quite good again.

Kind of Important
A ray of Tsunlight.
Metallica, I like Megadeth, but nothing beats out Master of Puppets.
Now, I do like their newer stuff, everyone freaks out "It's not as good as 'Puppets' or Ride the Lightning, etc. I'm glad they went the way they did, got off the thrash, and become more melodic.
