The value of rep
0
I +repped a new user for what I felt was a good contribution a short while ago. I've found myself doing that quite a lot recently, maybe using it every couple of days for things which aren't laugh-out-loud funny, but are a bit original or unusual; that is, of course, on top of the occasional genuinely amusing/cool post or upload, where I'm sort of glad that I didn't use it on mildly amusing things.
It just made me wonder what the balance of use of the system is around Fakku. If someone has uploaded a lot of material and I download any, regardless of outstanding quality, I'll make a point of repping them; I imagine some people will look for a worthy use of their rep, and others will give it to the first person who makes them laugh. On the other hand, Jacob's topic whereby you gained rep for posting pictures of your beverage (aside from being something of a pastiche of 'rep topics') might seem to show a certain disdain for rep, when people can upload and post loads and not get any. Whether or not you personally care about rep points, they do mean something to a lot of people, to the extent that it can incite bad feelings, as well as motivating people to post and vice-versa.
I wouldn't want this to be an argument over the value of the system in the face of flaws, because as long as it's there almost everyone will still be using it, and thus everyone will interpret its value differently. So basically, what function does it serve for you, and what value does it hold? Do you mainly -rep people to keep a check on quality etc or do you mainly +rep people, and how often? If the latter, is it for making you laugh or making a good contribution, or is its value reserved for particularly epic posts?

I almost always spend my daily point in the User Upload Section, sometimes in Requests, epic threads, Master-lists and other compilation topics~
Just a number to give them a well deserved pat on the back!

or a someone new who starts contributing, I'll give them rep more priority to encourage them and let them know that their doing a good job.
Or someone who completes my request
I do rep on stuff i find really really funny, but rarely

So basically, what function does it serve for you, and what value does it hold?Since it differs on individual, I used to think high rep number was pretty awesome when I first came here and want to have that too. Then I realized the rep number isnt really that important rather the upload/post that gets the "this user has got +1 reputation for this post".
When I upload/post something, and get repped for it, I think that "wow someone appreciates this upload/post" Self confidence +1, will try to do the same thing in the future etc kinda thought. Its more like a signal that letting the poster know that someone liked what you did, so do more of it.

I enjoy every rep I get for contributions, but sometimes I'm also pretty upset over -reps I get because someone got butthurt by something I said. Doesn't happen that often as of late, though, that stopped somewhere along the way.
As for other users, I don't treat those with high rep any different than those without or even with negative rep. It totally depends on the person.

It means my e-penis is larger than yours.
On a more serious not; I dun care THAT much, but it makes me annoyed getting a derep for something I've uploaded (like in my fap-thread, trance-thread or past rainmeter-thread), since it discourage me from posting anything more, since sometimes it actually takes some effort do make and/or upload it.
If you can dl something without shame, at least show your appreciation for it (and not just talking about myself here, do the same to everyone that has contributed to the site and your personal happiness). If you do not have any rep, then at least leave an encouraging post.

Just a little appendage: I'm not really questioning the value of high rep over low rep, that's been discussed in every rep topic ever; there are, for instance, numerous individuals who almost solely inhabit the irc and are well respected, and people like Harmonian who've stopped being massive douchebags. As has been said, for me it's not the number but the value of each one in context; they serve as an indication of quality (what you perhaps should and shouldn't be posting) and appreciation, and while it can get me down a bit when I get -repped for something which I didn't mean to come across in a bad way, that is a lesson learnt. In those respects, the system is ultimately a positive one.

Speaking your mind can get you a nasty backlash if you don't have the same opinion as the "hivemind".
To not derail the thread, spoilers.

zero, zilch, none.
Oh, I wish. I'd totally start using the rep system!

Rep is basically in a sense a thankyou system of fakku. Nothing more nothing less... oh and it can also be used as the "I hate you system" if you're an asshole, a "suck another user's epenis" if you're a faggot, and a "touch yourself in public system" if you're a pathetic lowlife. In short it's whatever fucked up system that the public makes it to be...

I +rep people who contribute things to the community, and the occational hilarious comment. I've never -rep'd anyone, I think you would have to do something pretty bad to make my -rep you. As for what the system means to me, I think it is a way to show people that we appreasate all the hard work they are doing uploading things to the community, sadly there are far too many people working very hard to give to the community and not so much as geting a thank you.

I'm the same as ShadowWorld. I don't think I've negative-repped anyone because there are so many people to positively rep. I hand out my reps in a systematic way, and no matter how long it takes me, I come back to rep. I rep a great contribution or something that makes me lmfao so hard that I cry every time I see it. I even have a folder in my bookmarks for recent stuff that I feel needs to be repped (prolly sounds insane to you people, but it means a lot to me to show people they are appreciated).
I don't really see a need for negative reps when you could just go out and tell someone, "Hey, you, fuckin' idiot, stop that shit." But, I don't know, maybe it saves a lot of arguments to have a post devalued by a negative rep, because it's so... legit-looking. Lmao. I don't know. I also don't know how much users appreciate a positive rep, but I give it anyway because I am easily touched by the hard work and humor of others.
