WATCHMEN MOVIE

I've heard that is movie is very "Anti-hero" based. If so I'm seeing this.I'm not sure that it's "anti-hero" (I'm not even sure what that means), but to me, Watchmen isn't a superhero book. It uses superheroes as a means of conveying some very important points. That said, it disappoints me when I see people dress up as Rorschach or say that he's the coolest comic book character ever, because he's not a very positive character. I don't think he's supposed to be liked.
I only point that last bit out because I'm sure that there are going to be a lot more people dressing up as Rorschach and saying that he's the best character ever once the Watchmen movie comes out.

Anti-hero is in a sense the "Byronic protagonist", in novels these days it seems that the classical protagonist no longer exists. People want someone who is better than them, but shares faults with them, so they can relate to him/her. It has been swept along with the trend that more and more people are satisfied with their inadequacy.
People don't want to see a Paragon of all that is just and good, they would rather see someone who is struggling between morality and selfishness, or someone with strong sociopathic tendencies trying to make the world into their own image. It's generally an easier character for the public to live with, as their own inadequacy does not shine quite as brightly next to an anti-hero than it would next to a real hero.

That's the big thing with the Watchmen graphic novel though. Alan Moore has stated that there are really no protagonists or antagonists in the novel. Its kind of hard to directly identify with one of the characters, sure there are certain traits that are similar, but the characters in Watchmen were created to be conflicting. I do agree with Ambivalent Ecstasy though in that people are liking anti-heroes more and more.
You want to hate the Comedian, but there are times when he seems so human, you can't help but like him. You want to like Rorschach, but he does some pretty graphic things (more so in the movie from what I hear). You think you should dislike Ozymandias, but he's so committed towards peace and the end of the Cold War.

Spoiler:
In all seriousness, I'm expecting a good movie. Just as long as they don't fuck up the original material, I'll be fine.
Well, time to finish reading the series.

So I skipped class today and went to see the movie with my roommate.
Overall, it was pretty awesome, though be warned that it is not just very violent but painfully violent, as in cringe-worthy moments.
However, I do now question whether Snyder was a good choice for director. The things that bothered me most were his stupid inappropriate slow-motion instants occurring often at inappropriate times, action sequences that dragged out far beyond what their importance to the story merited, music choices that didn't contribute to the effect of the movie in some cases, and a few instances of excessive violence. All those are on Snyder.
I think the movie is totally worth seeing, but my roommate said that if one hasn't read the comic, it's hard to follow. I had and really enjoyed it, but I could see where it could be confusing.
Also, this, which contains spoilers

So I watched the Watchmen today and it was pretty good. It's convinced me to read the graphic novel (which probably would have been better if I had done it the other way around).

I agree with you about the slow motion action scenes. I was never a fan of it, and at best it should not be used that often. But I have to disagree with you on the choice of music. I thought the music choices were pretty good. I only heard a couple that I would disagree with. The music for the action was well used as the "calm" music added contrast with the fast paced action that was going on.
Anyway, overall I as WhiteLion said it's a movie worth watching. Watch it. :) (there isn't a standard smiley to use to make it look like the Watchmen...)

Spoiler:
Somewhat altered ending?
Spoiler:
Hearing that the movie is very violent is disheartening. Watchmen wasn't meant to be a typical comic book with a ton of violence that riles up the reader.
I heard on a Watchmen special on G4 that Tales of the Black Freighter was coming out on DVD, I think when Watchmen comes out on DVD. It's chock full of violence and gore, of course, and I probably won't watch it. Reading it in the comic was enough. I don't need to see it in video, especially since it looks like the Spawn cartoon from a while back.

About the violence:
Watchmen is a violent comic, and I have no problem with bringing the violence shown in the comic to the movie, but Snyder seemed to feel it important to add even more gore and violence, which I don't think has any effect, other than making audiences cringe. Ideally, Watchmen should be in the realm of stark realism. Snyder's constant use of excessive violence almost makes it seem absurd, as per Kill Bill.

I understand what they were trying to to by using "period" music, but it didn't work for me. Other than the intro, it just felt too jarring and manufactured, like one of the Vietnam war documentaries.

Seeing some of the Watchmen characters on film was actually pretty cool.
I'm glad some of the supplemental pieces shown at the end of each issue were also included on film, if they were to include everything it would've been one long film, the the theatrical cut is already nearly three hours.
Some things...
Anyway, if you enjoyed the comic you'll probably enjoy the film.

Went to see it twice, seemed to enjoy it more the second time for some reason.

Finally saw it yesterday. Man that seen in Archie was hot.
I get what you mean about the music. The songs they chose for The Comedian's funeral, the final sex scene (Y'know, the one with tits) and that one Russian song they played towards the begining were just terrible. I did enjoy getting to listen to All Along the Watchtower, though.
The best line throughout that whole movie was "Free is just another word for Socialism."

Maybe the original scene with Rorschach an the kidnapped would come across as a saw ripoff on film, I don't know.
I liked it, gratuitous slow-motion and full-frontal male nudity aside.
It's been a long time since I've read Watchmen, so I really need to go get it and read it again to compare.
