A Game of Thrones by George R.R MartinI want to buy these books...but I have a hard time reading something if I've already watched the tv series and know what's going to happen.
Is it different enough? Or does the TV series do a good job in staying true to the source material?

The TV series is pretty damn close to the novels. Of course in that short of a span of time, it isn't possible to cover -everything-, and you will understand what's going on better if you've read the novels, but thus far they've done a very good job. If you have a hard time reading what you've seen, I'd say just start at the second book.
I just finished the 5th myself. And am rather peeved at the cliffhanger endings for multiple characters. +_+
