Apparently it's fucked like that and I wanted to know if that's true. If so, what to do when that day rolls around. They said this fucker can turn off your security so should I just stay offline the entire day?

Wow, isn't that something? Pretty interesting. Must take talent, so much of it, to come up with something like that. Unfortunately, assuming it's real, there's a high chance that if malicious activity occurs because of it, several people will be affected. And if it comes in the form of a scam, I'm pretty sure lots of people will fall for it. I do wonder.. what would be the best thing to do. That's pretty soon though. I look forward to seeing what happens... that's if something does happen... the page seemed legit.
But yeah, talk about scams, viruses and all of that.. brings back memories of that recent post Jacob made (about that Russian female). Lol.

I remember this being on slashdot a couple of weeks ago and this is definitely real. A quick search there pulled up these interesting articles:
Microsoft slaps $250k bounty on Conficker worm
Researchers Ponder Conficker's April Fool's Activation Date
.CA Registrar trying to preempt Conficker
Also, just because you are on a mac doesn't mean you are safe. Be careful out there on the internets.
here's some justifiable proof:

At work, I mostly look at application-level security. Most of this is really independent of operating system. For example, source code reviews or reverse engineering binaries doesn't depend much on the operating system. I've spent a lot of my research time on Macs because I like them and they also happen to be pretty easy to break!

Yeah, I know about that article, but the truth is that Windows viruses and worms simply don't work on Macs and not many people really hack the casual users like me.
There's really nothing of value stored on my machine anyway.

You beat me to it. This was on our local news last night:

They suggested you updated your windows and stuff.
Any hackers think they wanna try to solve the case and get 250 grand?

AVG can get rid of it as well as several other scanners such as Kaspersky, McAfee, etc. Just keep your stuff up to date. I don't think I will be updating my windows tho. I will just stick with XP SP2. I'm not really worried about it. It's just like a bunch of other stuff that is blown out of proportion.

I heard about this a while ago. My computer was up to date though, so I'm not particularly worried. :P

Okay, seeing how the recent posts seem to back up the idea that something will happen and protection is necessary, I've a question.
What upgrades/software should one use to be safe...?

Windows Protector, if it's been upgraded and has the firewall on, should be sufficient by itself.

Seems just like the task manager to me. (I have it active on my computer at the moment). However, though it seems that way, it looks/seems decent (a bit better/a bit more advanced) It's decent... no... not decent...
+rep and thank you. Lol. I'll check other windows products as well.

AVG. I suggest AVG to everyone for every thing. They're the best. Download the latest version of AVG and update it, run a scan and you're done. If Conflicker was on your PC waiting it will get rid of it. AVG has been proven to get rid of it. You can even wiki it if you want proof.

Oddly enough, i just now heard of this. I already checked my PC and it seems that I'm not infected with anything yet. I was wondering if maybe disconnecting my computer from the net for a day could help me avoid this worm. After all, what better way to survive a plague than to get away from the infected right?

I think it said something like "even if you disconnected your computer from the net, as long as you have been infected you will still be affected by the worm." or something like that, which means that only infected PCs are vulnerable even when disconnected. I checked already and it seems that im clean. so aslong as im disconnected starting tonight i think i should be OK...unless the worm magically transports itself from the net to my un-internetized computer...and yes i know un-internetized isnt a word

Running a full scan right now. I hope I don't get that shit.
