You could just destroy the evidence. smash the hard drive with a hammer (its harder then you might expect though, they don't call it hard for nothing), then toss it in a river.
lmao, i did that a while back. when i was younger i downloaded a ton of fucked up shit, including a fair bit of underage (hey i was underage too, i was simply looking for porn in my own age group). then when i turned 18 i realized i could totally be arrested for it. in a fit of serious paranoia i disposed of said hard drive in said fashion. of course i no longer download that stuff now. underage, not loli. as far as im aware, loli is legal in US. i hope it is...

To destroy a hard drive what you need to use is a magnet...
...preferably the one on the hard-drive itself, to a damn strong magnetron (in a microwave) will do in a pinch.
A hammer's no good. I know that several people were convicted over bits and pieces of data recovered from a physically damaged, but unerased hard drive.
There's a well known data-recovery firm Kürt Inc. that published stories on how they could prove the owner of the smashed (by an industrial press!) hard drive was trying to counterfeit money.

I am paranoid about it (I'm not sure if paranoid is the right term as it implies and irrational fear and I think I'm being pretty sane about it)
I have are a 'Boot and Nuke' USB I take with me if I take my laptop.
If you ask me, were heading for an alternative utopia. Like the one represented in the game 'Mirror's Edge'. I mean just look at all the shit they're trying to pass about downloading online.
To quote someone else on the matter "America you will be next, first amendment or not."

Few points to consider here:
1. Unlike in the US, you can be charged with perverting the course of justice for refusing to hand over encryption keys or even access to physical storage, assuming they ask for them. I'm not sure how well TrueCrypt covers you, but if they know there's something being hidden or you're using simple RARs, you're still pretty fucked. Better than having your name taken, of course, but then that's assuming that there isn't enough ulterior evidence to convict you with.
2. I completely understand your concern, but as has been said, police resources are concentrated elsewhere; the only risk is with committing other crimes, or drawing attention to yourself by dling huge amounts of anything, as I can see the ISPs checking heavy users to make sure it isn't pirated etc. The law is there but the link between abuse and loli ultimately isn't, so the rather darker and more elusive paedophile rings are going to be a lot higher on that hit list.
3. It's going to need a Supreme Court test case to set the standard for convictions, and that isn't likely to be you. Hell, it isn't likely to be anyone, but I can see it being a paedophile with some loli on the side. Not a good scenario, but we can't really make a judgement as to the risks or punishments until that happens.

Still no good. The parts in a hard drive are chemically inert and won't react with water. Also being totally submerged will slow rusting.
@Doswill Rule: that's why I mentioned that you can make a false partition in Truecrypt and show that to authorities. However never ever rely on the good will of the authorities or your own perceived "unimportance". Everyone makes a "good example", if prosecuted you could be brought down for various reasons - and whole lot of them would have almost nothing to do with your person.
(Putting a "pedophile" behind bars and being tough on them looks stellar in a law-enforcement/judicial resume. No one bothers with the small print that you were just looking at erotic comics/cartoons).
