I would love to learn it, but my language-learning skills have been tried my whole life... though I took French from 3rd-7th grades and Latin for a year, I seem to have trouble getting beyond a certain level of speaking due to my learning disability.
However, I'd also feel silly and too typified "otaku" to learn Japanese just for the sake of my hobbies... but I do think it would be useful and wonderful to master! :o

My main Purpose is going to JapanI self-studied in Highschool for 3 years, that pretty much covers most common vocabulary and conversation. In result, I can play/read/watch anything RAW. (KAnji is still a bitch though)
Now I'm attending a real course, to study it more deeper.
I don't know why some people avoid studying languages like the plague, and always blame "Time" and "I'm Busy" as their excuse.
Well its because they are lazy. Its all a matter of getting focused and being passisonate about learning the language.

I was forced to learn French from grade 4-9, I did not enjoy it, I did not learn much french from it. Its a matter of actually wanting to do it for yourself.
Hey, a language is a language. It'll help you get employed better, you'll be able to read and write Japanese which will help you understand and read anime, manga and the such.

I've completed my 2nd year of JPN. I was thinking of taking a Conversation class instead of going on to JPN 3, but it never happened. As to why I started, I like anime and thought it'd be cool to understand what they're saying. The reason to continue to keep learning for me would be to be able to watch RAWs and have the ability to play untranslated games, like what Kaimax does.

No formal lessons available in my vicinity, so I've gone the self-taught route.
My reading skills are excellent, but since I've had nobody to engage in back-and-forth conversation with, my actual Japanese speaking skills are weaksauce.
Also, my handwriting sucks horribly, and I have a hard time with Kansai-ben and Oosaka-ben.
I at least figured out the Windows JPIME.

Self taught my self for a bit, but still a noob at the language. Took up a short course for the basics, so I can get by a visit to Japan. Currently looking to take up learning the language properly (read and write).

I study and learn Japanese so that when I visit the country at some point in the following years I can truly become part of the actual culture. I hate being bound by dumb tourist attractions because you don't understand the language, and country norms. Plus you are respected a hell of a lot more when you speak or even attempt to speak the language aside from KO-NI-CHI-WAH!!.

Anyone else having trouble remembering how to write the kanji? I keep forgetting how to write it even though I practiced it the day before. I can read it but when it comes to writing it out off the top of my head, I blank out ._. or I remember parts of the kanji and not all of it.

I was thinking of learning Japaneses. I found a(Few) cool sounding TTRPG online but I can't find translations :( But that's probably not enough of a reason for me to learn...

lol, exactly the same for me.
Had to resort to teaching myself since over where I live, only European languages are taught... well, it's been 4 years since I first took it up.
Kanji is still a bitch sometimes, as usual...
I actually started learning Japanese not because of anime and manga but because of video games, haha. I'm into JRPGs, nearly all of those I own I imported from Japan... and of course some gems don't make it to the US, so I had to bite the bullet and learn that stuff.

I would love to learn it fluently, but it would be rather time consuming and whilst I'm not opposed to hard work or challenges, I don't think I would make progress fast enough to keep going. I'm still not ruling it out though.
Edit: I voted for Boobies :D

Curious and Wondering
I study Japanese every other Saturday and Sunday (4 days a month, roughly) at a Japanese language tutorial program near my place of work. I take and pay for it lesson per lesson, so I end up having different classmates every time. I've been taking it for a little over a year now.
The lessons, ironically, are 60% aimed at emigrants and people seeking permanent residence in Japan, and I'm not planning to leave my country anytime soon yet. I took it since it was near and convenient for me to spend aimless non-working weekends, and they assign a lot of practical reading, homework and practice lessons... I like that. Some self-study is nice.
Initially it was the allure of anime and manga that led me to such a fascination to learn Japanese, but eventually practicality and sheer desire of learning kicked in. I self-taught myself basic Japanese during college, even enrolled myself in other colleges' language courses tackling Japanese (same university), but over time I sensed it could only take me that far, and taking professional lessons can give me more.

@animefreak - meh, her body is pretty :3 but her face has too much makeup. I haven't heard her speak a long phrase of Japanese yet. Always something like basic Japanese stuff like "Kore ha mizu desu!" "Oishii!".
Some Gaijin youtubers speak Japanese and live in Japan, check those guys out.
@jmason - I'm going to attend a class on Saturdays starting in September. It was originally meant for Japanese-Canadians to learn Japanese but they allow other people in to learn and put them into different language groups as well. I'm quite excited to go there. My university doesn't offer Japanese so I'm pretty bummed about that.
But, since I have time right now during the summer, I'm doing self study to learn more kanji. It's fun to write as well. Just can't seem to remember how to write complexed ones after a day, can only read them. Weird... =\

idk i just don't like people who think they got to speak a language they don't know to others who don't know it either just to act cool to others, i understand that their minds are full of shit, if a tourist that speaks only japanese ask you for info and you can relay info in japanese it great, but if you talk to other waps just for the praise or self loving just because you can say desu or kawaii your a moron.
yes i know some gaijin speak japanese and live in japan, i'm one of them but i only speak japanese to people who can't speak english or can't understand certain words and phases, my wife is japanese, my daughter is half japanese, most of my friends are japanese and my students are all japanese but i don't speak it unless it necessary. i also speak French and Catalan but do i talk to other people in it just because i can... my rant when to long.
