I see what your getting at. Your rant is justified lol. I grew up with some white girls who liked anime and really all they knew were those typical weeaboo words (Kawaii, neko, kitsune), it got annoying fast. Funny thing, they aren't that interested in Japanese anymore. Guess it was just a phase.went i was in college there was a japanese cafe on campus and i knew the manager and we use to talk bout shit and he didn't speak english too good and use my limited skill of japanese that was four grade and spoken like i had down syndrome, but i was learning. this little white Gothic lolipop chick was ordering food use phases and terms that no normal person would and the funniest shit came out of her mouth when she ask if they could put it in her bento box which was pink and with cutely dog and flowers which if i saw it in japan it would still be weird

idk i just don't like people who think they got to speak a language they don't know to others who don't know it either just to act cool to others, i understand that their minds are full of shit, if a tourist that speaks only japanese ask you for info and you can relay info in japanese it great, but if you talk to other waps just for the praise or self loving just because you can say desu or kawaii your a moron.
I don't see a problem. Actually seeing the love for japan - even if it is just people learning a few words - makes me happy. I like that the world is becoming obsessed with a place that I live, and if someone is gloating about a few words they learned I think that is okay, hopefully it will make them want to learn more. Japan is unique in the way it is so similar to the west (USA) and so so so very different at the same time. Bridging those gaps takes small steps like people learning a few words for fun and pride.
On Rosetta Stone, I used it when I learned I was moving here. It teaches by comprehension of meanings and connotations, not literal translation like some people want. But I can say that when taking an actual Japanese class, my teacher was impressed with how natural I sounded. I attribute that to RS - most new people I meet compliment my pronunciation too.
Now if only I didn't suck at reading and writing...

The only problem is with those people who learn a few words. And that's all. They only know how to say those few words. Over and over and over again. KAWAII NE!? NE? NE? NE? "Ne" is so overused.

I started learning 2 years ago. I got the basics down like particles, i and na adjectives, and general sentence structure. Not to mention kanji to boot. Reason for learning is that I got tired of subs and scanlated shit. I wanted to be able to read and watch raws.

I was studying up until recently, but my interest started waning and now my schedule has become a bit busier. Originally I wanted to study it because I was a fan of anime, but when I got into high school I realized it would actually be beneficial because it's said that the primary languages that people should learn is English and an Asiatic language. They speak specifically of Mandarin, but any Asiatic language would still be useful.

I started learning Japanese because I was a weeaboo fag jealous of my antisocial friend's Japanese upbringing. Which is to say he spent a few years of primary school there and had successfully maintained a high level of conversational Japanese ever since, even though the rest of his family had long since forgotten how to speak it.
Later, because I'm also a linguistics nut, I really got into the aesthetic beauty of the structure of the language and everything just sort of clicked. I'm still waiting for something similar to happen with Mandarin, but my hopes are sort of fading on that front.
Now I translate porn, supervise other people who translate porn, and rage at shitty fansubs (which is most of them) because I could do better if I wasn't so goddamn lazy. There are like four good groups and they don't begin to cover all the good shows, srsly what the fuck.

I learned Japanese because.... oh wait I was born in Japan!
For those of you trying to learn, please don't learn Wapanese for the love of God.

I studied Japanese mainly so that I can read Japanese VN and light novels, and mangas and anime are just a bonus. It's just too bad that I don't really have much time to study for it, can only squeeze in about 2-3 days per week. Luckily I know how to read chinese so I don't have much trouble remembering kanji.
P.S.: I saw someone mention e-books, so where can I get them? Japanese of course.

a question for people who have already learned the language and speak it fluently, how do you keep from getting overwhelmed? i just started reading my copy of genki 1 a integrated course to elementary Japanese and i feel like im trying to hold up a mountain by myself, so how did you cope with it?

Genki 1 is as elementary as it gets, it's a good place to start. Do you have a teacher and/or a study plan? Either of those will help, although both is really best (but I guess the former tends to impose the latter).
A new language always seems overwhelming at first. Give it a couple of years and you'll start to get the hang of it. Keep in mind that learning doesn't happen overnight, and if you're not in it for the long haul then you might as well stop now before you waste any time on it, because you can't have that time back later when you decide you weren't really that interested after all.

Learn chinese. Then you'll see how easy Japanese can be.

anyways, getting to know Chinese doesn't make it "easy" it just gives you a head start on recognizing kanji figures, and that's it.

your right, its just such a big task it seems impossible, ill just be breaking it down it to separate parts and work on each until i get them, after that i hope it clicks together
